router IP Address and computer IP Address are in different subnet still has internet

On any LAN segment, all hosts (computers) must have the same subnet right?
How come a library has the LAN network configured as follow and still has internet connection?

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.12.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.4.1

As you can see the router IP Address and the computer IP Address are in different subnet.

I don't believe that it matters which subnet the computer is in as long as it has an active connection and can reach the default gateway although it might have problems reaching other computers. If this is a home router and you are using the default settings then you shouldn't have to worry about subnets.

We tend to think of Routers as devices that serve the internet to our devices, via wireless or Ethernet, but they are basically a type of managed switch that route data packets.

A library is likely to have hard routes, from the subnet to the gateway, programmed either in the Router or more likely in intermediate subnet managed switches to ensure the packets to and from the internet reach their objective

The LAN network computers has to be on the same subnet as the router, at my home router I tried to configured my pc to another subnet different than the router subnet and the internet cut immediately, so still don't know how the IT guy working at the library did the configuration.

Do you mean hard routes as manually configure the route print table right?
Do you know anything about the route print table configuration and what other devices requirement to accomplish the task of having internet while your computer and router ip address on a different subnet?

Do you have a specific reason for subnetting on your router? Home networks generally should be left for automatic configuration of ipaddresses unless you need to reserve a specific ipaddress for a specific computer. Subnetting is more for larger offices and enterprises with lots of computers and servers. Your router may not even have the capability for subnetting. If your internet works then why are you concerned about it?

Barman58 has provided one possible explanation and there may be others. Only the library IT staff will know for sure and as there are security implications it is unlikely they would tell you.

The default gateway is there to allow communication outside of the subnet so therefore it is independent of the subnet. Now other devices would need to have addresses within the subnet to allow direct communication however the default gateway is there to allow communication between subnets not within a subnet. Just out of interest I'm running a TP-Link Archer C7 Router, The router is 192.168.0.1 but the subnet used for both the main and the guest networks, (Both have Ethernet, 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless) is 192.168.1.1 that's how it came out of the box but there is a full set of manual controls for manual routing tables if I want it

for the manual routes you just enter a subnet address and it's relevant Gateway address (eg 192.168.5.1-255, 192.168.1.150)

1st router IP Address: 192.168.0.1
2nd router IP Address: 192.168.1.1

You can get a router with multiple interfaces. I don't see why anyone would want to do subnetting on a home network.

If I a get a router with multiple interfaces, is there a special configuration for the router?

I haven't work for corporation company yet, as a home user with an ISP router by default it only has two interfaces; a WAN interface and a LAN interface is that right?
Just out of curiosity how many WAN port and LAN port it has in a multiple interfaces router, a picture would be great.

Sorry but you are starting to ask questions that are beyond my knowledge and beyond the forum's scope. However home routers are designed to host one network. You will likely have to get a larger one designed for enterprises to have multiple networks.

when I was building networks for commercial use, the sub-netting was always achieved using Multi-port managed Switches, these started at several hundreds of pounds and went up to several thousands, I think prices are lower these days due to economies of scale. One idea would be to Google Managed Switch and see if you can find a .PDF manual to learn how to program them Cisco may be a good place to start

You are right different router has different features is hard to explain in a nutshell here in this forum for the configuration, I'll check cisco website to see if there any explanation or video of how is done to configure a pc that has different subnet than a router to have internet.
