Winbond CIR Transciever and remote control

Hello all,

I have an Acer Aspire Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
It comes with Winbond CIR Infrared Transciever (WPC876xL embedded device) but I never used it since it didnt come with the MCE remote control.
Is there any way I can use it with a universal remote control?
Or is my only option available purchasing an MCE remote control?

one person is using a TV remote in conjunction with WinAmp.
