Vista 64 HP system recovery problem

Hello & tia to All,

The installation from the recovery partition went w/o a hitch. Windows update is sluggish to non responsive. IE7 "cannot open the website-operation aborted" is the message when trying to download drivers from HP or anything from Microsoft.com. Read that I needed the current version of windows update agent and a newer version of IE but cannot get on the websites. It will open Google or AOL though.

I've recovered this laptop in the past (2+years ago) with very few problems but tonight I'm stuck. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is a good example of why Windows and other software products should be updated regularly. Microsoft ended support for SP1 in 2011. You should be running SP2 and IE9 - in fact you should be concerned that IE11 isn't supported on Vista and thinking about installing Chrome. It sounds like you're so out of date that Windows Update no longer works. Hopefully a Guru will have some suggestion other than take your PC to a repair shop.

[Edit] Sorry, after some sleep it dawns on me that I would be in the same situation if I had to recover from the factory image on my HP machine, so your question is of general interest for Vista users.

No problem Vistaar, I took your advice and dropped them both at a local shop. Yea I said both, my mother's and wife's. Boneheaded move trying to do both. Hopefully I'll get solid reinstalls from this guy, can hardly wait to get out of the "double dog house".
