URGENT! System Recovery Limbo

During the computer turning on, I picked up the keyboard and accidentally pressed a key that apparently starts system recovery.

The system recovery hasn't yet started but it refuses to allow me to cancel.

I'm stuck on that screen.

If I press next, all my files are deleted. If I press cancel, it asks "cancel and reboot?" and when I click yes on that, the reboot takes me right back into this screen.

I'm unsure of how long I can keep the computer turned on, and on this screen, so this is somewhat urgent.

PLEASE HELP!

Try hitting f8 on start up and select normal boot.

Resolved.

I didn't have a Vista DVD so couldn't boot from CD and do a repair that way, so I clicked [next] anyway and the recovery started.

It turned out to be fortuitous however because this was right:

A little error box popped up before recovery could start formatting the drives:

It turned out the boot manager was broken and couldn't boot the recovery partition. This meant the recovery couldn't proceed, and the files were saved through sheer accident.

To anyone reading this in the future, if you have the same problem, remember that an error box might not stop the recovery so don't count on the same turn of fate.

So where you able to fix your problem? In your case the recovery program is on the hard drive and if the problem is as you say the boot manager then it makes sense that it wouldn't work and that you had no other boot options. That is why it is more useful to use a recovery manger that is loaded from a cd or the Vista dvd. Thanks yes, it was resolved, restarting with the repair option simply booted me back into regular OS, and I think I can make repair disks now to fix the boot error as well.
