Windows problem reporting has stopped working - Vista 32 bit.

Hi,

I get the following message after every boot up at the desktop, “Windows problem reporting has stopped working”

The computer is a Dell XPS m1330 laptop running Vista 32 bit.

I ran Malwarebytes and Super-Antispyware which detected and removed a number of malware items. However, the error still exists.

The computer seems to function properly except for the annoyance of this error message.

I would appreciate some guidance on how to proceed.

Unfortunately, System Restore was found to be shut off and no restore points are available.

I ran SFC and got the following response:

When errors are found that can not be repaired, run SFC 3 times. boot each time.

Yes, the suggestion by Richard is definitely worth trying. Beyond that... hmmm... its difficult. In theory I think you can copy new files into the operating system, but you would need a Vista install disc to get a copy from. Its also a bit worrying that you seem to have had malware of some sort on your PC.

I ran SFC from a elevated command prompt four times with a reboot after each completion and got the same message after the fourth run. I ran it from normal mode. Would it be worth attempting in safe mode?

If that does not work you can just try to permanently disable.

The error message does not occur in safe mode. If I disable the services 1. Windows Event Log and 2. Com+ Event System the error message goes away in normal mode.

I am working on this PC for a friend and noticed that they changed the user name at some point as the old user name in the Users folder does not match the current.

The names should not be a problem. Try disabling error reporting, boot, enable, boot and notice if problem is still present. I gave you the "how to" in an earlier post

I don't have "Action Center" available in control panel (Win 7 feature?) and I also tried Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) from the run box, but it doesn't recognize it as a valid command. I do have a Problem Reporting icon in control panel that gets me to settings for disabling problem reporting. If that works the same, let me know.

I re-enabled Win Event Log and Com+ Services.

I then went to "Problem reports and solutions" in control panel and noted that the selections 1. "Check for solutions automatically" (checked) and 2. "Ask me to check if a problem occurs" are grayed out and not selectable.

Aside from that I was to go into advanced settings and changed "For all users and programs problem reporting is set to:" (changed from On to Off).

I rebooted but still get the same error message, only this time I got one pop-up window with the error instead of three or four windows with the same message. I also didn't get the suggested solution of checking Windows update to make sure Windows updates are current, which they are.

In looking through this thread , I noticed that no one mentioned opening Services in Administator Tools and checking the status of Windows Error Reporting Service.

On my system, it is shown as Started, Automatic.

Maybe I missed it.

I checked as suggested and Windows Error Reporting Service is set to Automatic and it is shown as Started.

If I understood correctly you want me to do the following:

Stop Windows Error Reporting Service (via Administrative Tools), disable it, and restart?

I did that and got the same error message "Windows Problem Reporting has stopped working"

As for other settings, Windows Problem Reporting is still disabled but all other services are enabled except for Error Reporting Service as stated above.
