Vista a good choice?

So I have this computer, not powerful enough to run Windows 8, it runs 7 just fine. problem is that I don't have a COA sticker and code for the Windows 7 copy that I have. However I do have a copy of Vista with a COA sticker. Should I run Vista? Considering support is ending soon, and Vista can be a pain to run. Thoughts?

If you do not have a valid key for Seven, you have no choice, you must buy Seven or use Vista
If you do not have a key for Seven it cannot be used and we would not even discuss that issue.
Vista is a very good system.

Problem is that I do not have a "legit" copy of 7. Just a burned copy. And no COA. Just a key from one of my old computers I got rid of. Not sure if that key is still in use.

You can call MS to see if key is valid
As I understand your question, you want to know if you should use Vista or buy a legit copy of Seven
If the key is not valid, you would have to buy a copy of Seven





Note: Kona0197 has indicated that he is inquiring about using Vista because the use of Seven will require the purchase of a key number. He would purchase the key if needed.

They would probably have me purchase a new copy or COA. I already have a copy of Vista and COA so my question stands. Should I use Vista? Would it work faster than 7 on my setup?

If you computer has a enough RAM etc, both would work equally well. If your computer is not too powerful, Vista would be a bit faster. If you want Seven you would need a valid key. The choice would be yours.

I prefer vista to 7 but in my experience Vista eventually uses more memory. How much memory do you have? 2 gb should be enough as long as you turn off unneeded services and don't run programs that are memory hogs. If you suspect that your version is pirated M$'s servers might eventually recognize that and require activation. A consideration is drivers. I have had some Vista drivers work on 7 whereas others do not. I haven't tried using 7 drivers on Vista.

Also note that if your vista copy is an OEM copy customized for another computer it likely won't work on yours. You can download a generic disk but OEM licenses are tied to the computer it was first installed on and won't activate on any others. Legally you need a retail copy to use on another computer.

This brings up a question I have: I have an OEM vista in my computer. I have the install disk and have installed vista many times on it. I also bought a W7 upgrade a few years back. On two of my drives, I have installed W7. I first have to install the vista, then install the upgrade over that. But what if I wanted to use the upgrade disk without first installing vista, on this or even another computer? I've seen tutorials of how to do this, which claim it is perfectly legal and will activate. I've not actually done it, it's just something I've wondered about.

As for vista as an OS, I love it. I use both it and W7, but have to say I prefer Vista. It's just cooler somehow. definitely from a visual perspective. too bad it had the initial troubles, which permanently injured its rep. It is actually a great system fully updated. I only have the 32 bit, where my W7 is 64, and I can use the full 8GB of RAM on my computer. But still the vista works better than the W7, which has persistent display driver issues. the more memory the better, but you can always add more.

An OEM copy is tied the system it was first installed on and supposedly won't activate on other systems. That's what I've read but I've never had an OEM copy of Vista. As for your 7 upgrade the best way to do that would be to install Vista first. A 7 upgrade license won't activate automatically if you do a clean install at least not without a hack (which for me hasn't worked) and Microsoft might or might not help. You can probably avoid activating Vista if all you are going to do is upgrade to 7 but if your copy is released by a manufacturer such as Dell it likely won't install on other systems or if it does you might experience stability issues.
