Solved Samsung SSD Pro 128GB

I have rung Samsung, I am still waiting for a reply.

So I thought I would try here

Because I am running Vista and not Win7, Samsung have "Samsung Magician", which I am guessing allows me to defrag the drive.

I have been away on holiday's, when I got back and restarted my desktop Samsung Magician immediately popped up with a firmware update. So I updated the firmware, followed the prompts and restarted my PC.

I have AHCI enabled, so even though I have my two Optical Drives as 1st and 2nd start up, so when the machine boots, the option of boot from CD/DVD is no longer there. BUT the two Optical Drives and also my 2nd SATA Hard Drive appeared.

Now to the issue at hand, after the firmware update, during the reboot the only drive to show up was the SSD, my SATA and two Optical's are no longer showing when the machine boots.

Once the PC had finished booting up, I went to Computer to make sure all the drives were there. The SATA HD was the two Optical's were not, I threw in a disk that had data on it, initially it didn't read. So I replaced it with my Vista Disk it then found one drive, put the Vista Disk into the other drive, and it found that as well.

My question to Samsung and to you guys is why aren't my other drives showing on boot up?

Have you tried opening Windows Explorer and mapping the network drives?

Edit: Do all your drives show up when you open the BIOS?

My WD SATA HD shows as do my external HD's there is no sign of the Optical's at all.

As for mapping, I do not have a networked house, each PC is a standalone, connected only via the LAN. My husband isn't the brightest of sparks when it comes to PC's, and wrote off a desktop, because he was too tight fisted to get a decent anti virus, it destroyed his HD, I tried a new HD replacement but something on the mobo must have gotten fried (he did have MSE). I use ESET Smart Security, and the same email we both got from his sister, literally ate his OS, while ESET on my PC would not open the URL. When I ended up building him a new tower again, he bit the bullet and now uses ESET. (Sorry sidetracked there).

I will attach a pic, it shows my Optical Drives C:\ is the Samsung it only has the OS and apps on it, the rest F:\ G:\ H:\ I: J:\ is my WD SATA HD N:\ P:\ and Q:\ are my externals.

I guess you didn't see the edit on my last post because you didn't mention the BIOS.

Open the BIOS. Go to Advanced BIOS Features. Is "Boot other devices" enabled? Under Hard Disk Boot Priority, are you hard drives shown there? Ditto for the CD Rom Boot Priority in regards to your optical drives?

Thanks. I thought you were talking about what Windows is seeing based on your screenshot.

Did you enable ACHI before or after the OS was installed?

I didn't look in the BIOS. Is there an option to enable Parallel ATA mode for ACHI?

Yes enabled ACHi before the OS went on, the drives have disappeared since Samsung's firmware update for "Samsung Magician".

Still waiting for a response from Samsung.

The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P, I have re read the manual and hunted high and low for Parallel ATA mode for ACHI, there doesn't appear to be any such animal.

Problem fixed, uninstalled Samsung Magician, changed BIOS back to IDE, reinstalled Samsung Magician, rebooted and both my HD and Optical Drives are back

That's what I was just thinking about before I saw your last response.

However, I don't think the trim feature will work in IDE mode. You would have to ask Samsung about that.

TRIM will not work in Vista full stop. That is what the Magician is for.

I understand that. It's just that I don't know if the Magician will work with an IDE setup.

Hard to say, it goes through the motions, but unlike a regular disk defragger that shows the fragmented sections, the magician doesn't never has.

As I mentioned before, I think you should ask Samsung. You definitely want the trim function to work.

I rang Samsung they said it will work in IDE and AHCI

Fantastic! I read about the latest technology all the time but my little mind only seems to store bits and pieces.
