I purchased a Samsung SSD 840 Pro, prior to installation I set the BIOS to AHCI. Put the SSD in and migrated my OS onto the new HD.

It wasn't until after a few boot ups, I noticed it was skipping the boot order of CD/DVD then HD. I double checked the BIOS to make sure this was indeed the correct boot order, it was.

I needed to boot off my Vista Disk, however, because it was skipping the boot order it didn't boot from the Disk.

The only way I could think of to get my boot order back, was to switch the BIOS back to IDE. Rebooted and it read the Disk.

What I would like, is to KEEP MY BOOT ORDER CD/DVD then HD.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. About the issue you mentioned, please change the battery and the model of the battery is CR2032. You can use any manufacturer for the bettery, but make sure the bettery model is CR2032 for 3V. After you change the battery, you may check if BIOS could work properly.

Does the computer have a Fn key you can press at boot time to bring up a Boot menu where you can choose what device to boot?
On my Dell it's F11, on my Lenovo it's F2.

You can try resetting BIOS as follows:

1. Power down the computer and unplug the power cord.
2. Open the case and remove the CMOS (CR2032) battery.
3. Press and hold the power button for 10 cesonds or so.
4. Replace the CMOS battery.
5. Plug in the power cord and power up.

You should get a CMOS error, Press F1 to continue, F2 to enter Setup. Press F2.
See if there is an option of Fn key to load defaults. If yes, do it.
Set date and time then check Boot order/priority and set the way you want.

See if that helps.

Yes I can boot from a disk if I use the F12 key. but I want to know why changing the BIOS from IDE to AHCI, has made the BIOS boot order redundant :mad:

I hate to say this but your firmware version may be too old for that hard drive. I try to avoid suggesting a BIOS update because if it goes wrong (update fails, wrong update selected, etc) then your motherboard could be permanently screwed up.

Although the battery option is worth trying and wouldn't cost that much to replace you'll have other issues though if the battery is dead such as the BIOS settings reverting to factory default settings and the time will keep getting changed. If you choose to change the battery do not touch it with your hands. Also make sure to take appropriate measure to prevent ESD. You can get a ton of how-to articles by googling that. Once I lost a floppy drive to ESD.

The BIOS has the latest update in it. I think I will just wait until my next rebuild, which while the boot order not being recognised, is more me being fussy about how I like things to work, as opposed to them not working at all.
