Hey everyone,
I first encountered the problem this past Thursday. My laptop had been running fine for a while, but now when I start up all I get is startup repair, and it is unable to repair automatically. I believe it is an issue with the hard drive and I will list the problem details below.
I checked out the post about how to ask for help so I will try to do that to the best of my ability now...I have enough experience with computers to fix very basic problems and my family usually asks me for help, but I would not consider myself anything close to an expert. I am not very familiar at all with the command prompt which is something that many of my google searches suggested using. Some of the suggestions included using scannow and chkdsk, but I am unable to do either, because of a system repair pending and something about the volume respectively. Even the suggestion of going through regedit to BootExecute doesn't work because I don't even see BootExecute listed above CriticalSectionTimeout
When I last was able to log in, I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, just using the internet to check my e-mail and fantasy sports teams. I've thought maybe charging my iPod the day before and then not removing it correctly could be the problem, but I've made that mistake before and still been able to log on the next day. No matter what I do, I cannot get past startup repair. I've tried all three safe mode options, last known good configuration, and disable automatic restart on system failure. I also tried to do system restore, but it keeps saying I have no restore points, which I believe is BS b/c whenever I've had an issue in the past but still been able to log on, I've been able to select between 2 or 3...but I digress. I do not currently have my files backed up and I do not want to restore to factory default and lose everything on my laptop - pictures as well as Excel and Word files are the primary things I care about saving.
Here's as much information as I know at the moment - let me know if you need more specifics:
OS: Windows Vista x64
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1520
BIOS Version = A03
Intel Core2 Duo processor
160 GB HDD
Don't exactly know if this affects the problem I'm having, but my memory shows I've installed 2048 MB out of 2046 MB available...yikes
Then here is the problem details I get from startup repair:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
Problem Signature 1: Auto Failover
Problem Signature 2: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6001.18000
Problem Signature 3: 6
Problem Signature 4: 1966109
Problem Signature 5: CorruptFile
Problem Signature 6: CorruptVolume
Problem Signature 7: 0
Problem Signature 8: 1
Problem Signature 9: Chkdsk
Problem Signature 10: 0
OS: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
Lastly, when I was running tests through the diagnostics, this is the error code it gave for the Hard Drive:
Error Code: 0146
2000-0146
Please help!!! If you need any additional info let me know.
