Used Shadow Copy Storage space is bigger than the Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space !

Hi,

I set the maximum shadow copy storage space to 8 GB in my Vista and thought I should never worry about the space in my system disk. However, I have just found the Used Shadow Copy Storage space is bigger than the Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space at the moment:

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 10.326 GB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 10.573 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 8 GB

Do you know why and how to limite the Used Shadow Copy Starage space?

It would be helpful if you filled in the System Specs. That way if you post on another issue people answering don't have to ask the same questions about your hardware over again, or search for the post with the info. Just push the specs link in every one of your posts.

I'm not sure how they measure the space usage. But 8 GB sounds like only a couple of restore points. How big is the HD? I suspect when deciding to discard an old restore point it looks at the current usage. If under the limit, it keeps all the old and makes another. That's just a guess on my part. But you can try a few different max numbers and see how it acts for yourself. As Yogi Berra said, "you can observe a lot by watchin'".

I don't think the maximum space for Shadow copy storage was ever intended as a firm limit. Windows will exceed it temporarily under certain conditions. In the interests of performance some activities relating to storage management are deferred to a later time. Much of how this works has never been publicly documented so I cannot provide any details.

The partition where my Vista located is 50 GB and only 9 GB is free at the moment. If the free space will reduced furthermore, I will get a warning! That is way I set the maximum shadow copy storage space and thought my Vista will obey this limitation.
I have just checked my Vista got 3 restore points now.

Perhaps it is the case as you said:
I remember that several days ago I found all old restore points was deleted and only 1 new restore point left, but a couple of days latter, 1 old restore point was back. Vista needs a couple of days to work for that??

50 GB is kind of a tight squeeze for a Vista partition. OK for XP maybe. If you cannot give the partition a little more space you may be better off to create backup images on an external drive. But that's up to you.

I would recommend Casper 8 for backup management, it is so easy and user friendly.

On my last PC Vista shared an 80 gb hard drive with XP however I had other drives for personal documents, music, videos, etc. I agree that with personal docs 50 gb is probably too small. If it is only used for the OS and installed programs it should be alright provided the op is managing space.

@townsbg - I probably run with more partition free space than most. I like to keep it so that I can pare it down quickly to 70% free space(less than 30% used) just before I defrag. That way i can do very cursory quick defrags very often. Typically 15 minutes. Things just seem to run smoother with more room. I haven't looked in awhile. Is the HD gouging over with?
