Im using a 2007 gateway laptop it was running awfuly slow so I decided to do a reinstall of windows xp home premium sp1, I didnt make any backups of anything and I used the original disc it came with, and after words I havent been able to connect or even see any wifi networks to connect to, I also have tried tturning the switch on and off and the little blue wifi light on the keyboard turns on but still my little wifi connector on the right side of the tool bar has a red X like if wifi wasnt turned on ive also restarted the computer a few times. Also I was thinking maybe something to do with the drivers but im really not sure what to do with that problem because ive never had this problem before. Please any help would be greatly appreciated, and if there is any other info you need id be glad to answer that for you. Thanks.

In all likelihood, you need a driver for the WiFi card inside your laptop. I recommend visiting the Gateway website and downloading the network/WiFi drivers for your specific model laptop. Once the drivers are installed, you should be able to see available networks... assuming XP works similarly to Vista (this forum is dedicated to Vista).

Welcome
Go to search by the start button
Type device manager
In device manager look for any small yellow markers. If you see any just update from the Device Manager
If you do not see any go to the Network Adapters to see the name of the company that manufactures the driver
Then with another computer go to that website, download the driver to a finger drive and transfer to your problem computer

Not necessary to uninstall the old drivers. Just get the most current one. Dont forget to check for those small yellow markers. I think that you may see them.

Rich is right, that if a device isn't properly recognized it will appear with a small yellow caution triangle next to it. I've generally found that using the driver update doesn't necessarily work in all cases, as it generally goes to the Microsoft servers to find the driver. The OEM manufacturer of the laptop will have tested drivers and have "officially approved" ones available there that are tested to work. However, it's possible newer drivers will work even though the OEM manufacturer hasn't approved them (they eventually retire laptops from support and don't update their driver downloads any longer--but it's irrelevant if your operating system hasn't changed).

Okay so im in device manager now and I have a yellow cone thing on my display adapter graphics adapter. And three unknown devices on device manager thats all it says it faulty but still my web wont work. My computer made a windows old and I found a backup folder but neither will allow me to update the drivers throigh them

When you have a problem (no internet), it become necessary to correct any other problem that we find at least to remove it as a possible cause. In your case, we do not know what that unknown device is, it may very well be the cause of your problem. All problems must be repaired, if we are to find the true cause.

All it says is to update all the drivers with the yellow marks. The most difficult part is to determine the manufactuer of the driver. That can be found by clicking on the unknown devices.

If you can plug in your computer directly into the network or router, you'll be able to allow Windows to update these drivers automatically. It should be able to use the local interface of the network card, versus the wireless one.
