Windows Media Player opens everything I click on. Why?

Windows Media Player automatically pops up when I first turn pc on. Most icons on desktop have wmp icon. when I right click, it doesn't give me "open with" option, it only gives me "Open" and it opens wmp.

Also, when I right click on desktop, then properties, I then click on "display setting".. it opens wmp.

When I click on "default setting" it opens wmp.

When I click on "Start', control panel, uninstall a program, every is ok until I click on "Turn windows feature on or off" wmp opens again.

I tried all suggestions on different forums, but at one point in one of steps suggested, wmp opens before I can complete unistall or disable.

Any better suggestions? I'm afraid quick fix links suggested in some forums. I am not computer savvy so not sure what to do. I start job next week, and I'll need to use my pc, but don't want anything to go wrong. Help!! Thanks

Hello genesis, and welcome to Vista Forums.

A quick fix would be to do a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened.

If that is not an option, then you could download and merge the .reg files for the listed lnk (LNK), exe, and dll options in the tutorial below. They will restore the default associations for these file extensions and hopefully fix this for you. You could also download and merge any other file extension that is not working properly as well if you like.

I get same result - wmp.... When I click on "Systerm Restore", it opens Windows Media Player", or when I type "rstrui" in search, wmp opens. Any other suggestions?

Try doing the system restore at boot instead. :)

I find it hard to believe that it opened WMP at boot when using METHOD TWO.

Did you boot to the "System Recovery Options" screen?

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, when I open .zip file it keeps opening new windows. I had to shut it off. When I turned back on, it kept doing same thing, so i turned off again. After about 15min, I turned back on, and it stopped.

I just opened .zip file again to merger, and it starts opening windows agian. Sorry, I just don't know much about computer. I'm starting a job from home, and I'll need to install software, don't want anything to go wrong. Any other help please! Thanks

Hi, I was finally able to system restore at boot, and wondows medial player problem went away, but now I have another proble..

I keep getting message when i open Internet Explorer and other files: "This file does not have a program associated with it for perfoming this action. Create an association in the Set associations control panel."

I just don't know what program to associate with each file.

Shawn's suggestion to clean up the default program associations should solve the problem. But if it doesn't, I'd be sure to download and install Internet Explorer 9. Also, are you on Vista service pack 2? If not, you should definitely get on it immediately. There are some critical updates in it, in addition to revisions to the Explorer engine that may implicitly solve your association issue.
