Help! I cant delete items on my desktop! "Could not find this item"

Hello. I was recently making my desktop look like a mac, and tried to delete a lot of desktop items. But when I tried to do so, it said "desktop.something is a system file. Deleting it can cause windows or another program to stop working correctly."
I clicked delete, as it prompted me 2 times. After that, the desktop icons did not dissappear. They just stayed there. When I try to launch them, I get the same error: "Could not find this item". But when I use windows explorer, they are gone. Please help. All help is appreciated.

From Windows Explorer, select from the "Organize" menu item the "Folder and Search Options". In that, click the "View" tab. Under "Hidden files and folders" click to "Show" them. This should enable you to see all files, including any that have a hidden attribute.
