1) What is the complete error message?
2) When do you get the error message?
3) What are the applications that have stopped working?
4) Have you installed any new hardware or software on the computer?
Method 1-
This issue is caused by a number of third party software. Some of them being Nero, Intel Viiv Software, Vegas Movie Studio, Quicktime etc.
I would have you uninstall the software.

You need to check if this issue persists in Safe Mode.

Start your computer in safe mode
Note: Make sure you log back into Normal Mode after performing all the troubleshooting steps.
You need to select “Safe mode with Networking” instead of “Safe Mode”.
Proceed to Step 2 if, the issue does not persist in Safe Mode.Step 2-
I would recommend you to perform Clean Boot.
Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

Method 3-
I would have you download and run and online virus scan.

Note: The antivirus will try to repair bad sectors on the hard drive damaged by virus. Any data present on these sectors might be lost in the process. Proceed at your own risk.
Method 4-
You need to Turn Off Data Execution Prevention.
DEP is a feature of Windows XP SP2 and Vista that prevents programs from running if it thinks there could be a problem.
Refer the steps-
a) Click on “Start” and type “cmd” (without the quotations).
b) Now, Right Click on “cmd” and select “Run as administrator”.
c) Copy and paste the command and hit “Enter”.
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
d) Restart the computer and check.
Method 5-
If you are facing this problem while viewing pictures and videos, then you need to refer the steps-
a) Open “Computer”, “Organize” and then “Folder Options”.
b) Click the “View” tab and then check the box next to “Always show icons, never thumbnails”.
c) Click on “Apply” and “Ok”.
d) Restart the computer and check.
