Save Desktop settings ?

I just recently did a windows update... added something like a INTEL....

I do see on my tool bar an Icon "intel graphics media accelorator driver"
I'm guessing this is it ?

In any case, now my desktop Icons keep moving every once in a while.

Anyone have an idea of what this Intel thing is ?

And if it would have anything to do with my desktop settings ?

Welcome back to the forums cowpoke.

First of all lets try the easy way out.

Go to your desktop, and right click an empty space. Now, see if the "Auto Arrange" section is checked. If so, uncheck it.

If this fails, please give us a more detailed view into your problem.

Hello,
auto arrange is not checked.

The gist of it is this, previously my desktop icons where arranged per my preference.

Recently when I downloaded/updated with the "intel" stuff I mentioned (first it reset my screen resolution, which I had to fix and then I noticed my desktop kept going back to what I assume is default settings) It doesn't do this every time I "restart" but occasionally, I'm guessing it has something to do with graphics or videos, ?maybe each tiime a certain type is used, for some reason it resets things..... just thinking out loud here.

p.s. the update was called "Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family"


how come when I go to the control panel > windows update > installed update history ( the "chipset..." shows up in the list, but I can't remove it there)

and when I go here control panel > programs and features > installed updates
(where you can remove things) it doesn't show ?

i.e. the 2 lists don't match...

Right, I could try that, never done it, how fail safe is it ?

I'd like to try and find the real issue though...

p.s. does going back to a restore point remove any personal files ??

The system restore will not affect your personal files.

I looked and it appears that I on't have a restore point...

Since I'm not really sure what the origin of the problem is, maybe another approach is
to figure a way to set/save my Desktop , is there a way to do this ?

Okay, whatr most likelty happenbed is the update was a driver upodate. It wiped out the old one, so windows goes to default which causes the desktop top re-put the icons back as a group.

Now not all driver updates are the best, and it seems like maybe its not shutting down correctly and thus resetting.

I would try a driver "Roll-Back" using the device manager. Right click on the display adapter -> Properties -> Roll Back.

That shouold go to the last driver used.

Go to any of the big free software download sites like Softpedia, Sourceforge, Snapfiles, File Hippo and search for terms "desktop icon save restore". You should find a bunch of free ones. Esp. where you are running 32 bit OS you should not have a problem. For 64 bit systems the choices are fewer since the code has to be part of Explorer memory space. This is usually done by making a shell extension.

Position your icons and do a Save. If you regularly use more than one screen resolution you might need to do a save for each res. Depends how the code is written. The program may just save the position x,y numbers for each icon. If it is designed for one save set to work with all resolutions then it may be written using percentage of the x and y screen dimension instead of just the hard wired number. I think most just use x,y numbers for each icon. They are saved to a file usually named with the screen res and user name as part of the name or the settings may be saved to the registry for the current user. The name of the icon is used as the title for setting the icon position in the desktop ListView.

If the icons keep getting reset after you manually restore using an icon position saver, then there's a bug that has to be dug out. Otherwise an icon position saver should do the trick.

I'm not sure where he looked for the restore point. Was it in Safe Mode?

I ran a spyware program, maybe that will help.... we'll see.

Does anyone have specific info on the "intel graphics media accelorator driver"
is that just an addon/enhancement or something I actually need ?

I think it would be optional but, if you try playing a graphics intensive game or try to render video files, you may not be successful.
