Can't find engine "VBScript" for script

I think I wrote in here once before and didn't get any help, but I'm going to try again.

No matter what I try to do that has anything to do with VBScript, I get a window as shown attached. At this point, I am pretty sure that this has something to do with Avast. But I don't know how to fix it. I found a link that gave some pretty clear, simple instructions at Solution: Can’t find script engine “VBScript” for script. – Tips from the trenches of advanced computer repair

The problem is that the key this article describes (HKCR\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32) as the one to change does not appear in my registry. Please see my screenshot showing the key I have.

Please, Please ... Can some computer guru out there help me out on this?

Hi, welcome back to vista forums.

Sorry that you didn't receive any help last time you posted.

From my knowledge of what you gave me, it seems that your antivirus is blocking VBScript from making changes to your registry. Have you tried disabling it and then using VBScript?

I don't think that's any solution. I can't disable my antivirus every time VBScript needs to come into play.

The way I understand it, Avast may overwrite this key, which changes the key's value to Avast script scanning DLL. I think that value has to be reverted back but I don't know how to do this. I would think Avast could help me with this but so far I haven't had an answer and I wrote to them first.

Avast doesn't overwrite the key, it would just simply delete the key.

Have you tried adding VBScript into the Avast! exceptions list?

I don't even know how to add something like that to the Avast exception list.

I hate to argue with someone who apparently knows what they are doing, when I do not, but did you check the links because according to what I've read, what you said is not correct.

You were actually right, I didn't click the links because I was just skimming through the issue.

I went to all 3 links now, and I noticed in the 3rd one it says "Usually some Antivirus vendors replace the original VBscript dll to ensure no bad scripts should be executed on the computer."

So you went to your registry key and couldn't find the same file as everyone else to use regedit on.

Either this links to my first suggestion, which was that Avast was deleting the file; or it is hiding under a different name.

I will try to find a fix tomorrow as its getting late.

Just a question, is it a paid version of Avast or just a trial?

I personally don't like using Avast because of situations like this, I can offer you a better, quieter anti-virus that doesn't interrupt with your work.

If its a trial, we can uninstall and continue.

This is the paid version and I have over a year left since I purchased the 3-year deal. I'm interested in what you were going to suggest. Right now, if I were left on my own and going to trash avast, I would install Microsoft Security Essentials and turn my Windows Firewall back on. I'd like to know what your suggestion would be.

http://www.eset.com/us/ is in my opinion the best anti-virus for every day use.

and Prevx - Customer and Network Security and Breach Management is excellent, even the free version, because it scans every single thing that you click and tells you if its not safe instantly.

If you were to trash Avast, you still have the activation code, am I right?

This way, you can uninstall and then continue with the every day use, then once we find a proper fix you can re-install with your serial key.

I have heard of eset and think I remember it favorably. I have not heard of the other one. I will check into both and you had a good idea about shopping around while I sitll have my key.

I sent a support request directly to avast tech support and got an answer back advising me to uninstall avast in safe mode using their tool, etc., etc. I followed their instructions but the vbscript is still broken. From what I read, Avast overwrote this key and now it's got to be changed back by going into the registry, but I sure don't know anything about that. I could follow directions if I could find some, but as stated previously, I do not find the key in my registry which those instructions I found refer to, and I would assume I'm not finding it because Avast has changed it to read something else.

Do you have ccleaner by any chance?

run it and use the registry repair.

Yes, I have CCleaner and run it regularly, the Windows cleaner and the registry scanner.
