Clicked Desktop Brought Password Screen

Just got my computer out of sleep. As is sometimes the case, the IE task bar icon on the bottom left was not highlighting when I put my cursor over it so I clicked the desktop as I usually do and the Password screen for signing in came up. I had to enter my password to get back to the desktop.

The only thing I changed about my computer recently was puttng a lot of my desktop icons into two folders. I restarted sometime after that because I found that malwarebytes was not making sound after scanning which was fixed by the restart.

I've noticed of late that when I restart the computer the taskbar icons on the bottom right seem to take awhile to appear which would be Avast!, VIA HD Audio Deck, Volume, and my internet access. I only have 6 programs that are set to launch at startup.

Sorry that none of us have been able to assist you yet, I'll just bump this up for you so other people can see the thread.

The problem is kind of unclear, are you saying that once your computer comes out of sleep, you get asked to sign in again?

Thanks for the bump.

When I clicked on the desktop (or maybe the taskbar) after bringing it out of sleep today the login screen came up and I was forced to sign-in again.

When you wake up your computer from sleep, are you initially presented with the logon screen, and then after the desktop appears you are prompted yet again when you click on it? Or, do you not have user authentication control in effect and don't have to log in when starting up your computer?

No, I wasn't presented with the login screen when I woke the pc from sleep. To be as specific as possible I'll highlight what happened step-by-step and do so in the present tense:

1. I press spacebar to wake PC from sleep mode
2. I drag my cursor over the IE icon on the left side of the taskbar to open IE
3. The IE icon is not highlighted--"inactive" I call it.
4. To activate IE icon and use IE I click an empty part of my desktop with
the cursor/mouse. (Sometimes after sleep my taskbar icons are "inactive"
and I click the desktop to activate them, though clicking on them directly also
works.)
5. The desktop is replaced with the sign-in screen
6. I type in my password and the desktop comes back

I do have to log-in/use my password everytime my PC boots.

I have "don't require password." Checked that I had that checked before posting.

I suppose my PC is slightly corrupted. We'll see what transpires from here.

You mentioned putting desktop icons into folders. I don't know why you did this. A desktop shortcut resides in the desktop folder. Maybe something got confused by moving them into a folder that isn't in your username pathway?

If other icons work and don't require you to provide a password, then delete the ones that do (like the one for IE) and recreate them. I find it best to right mouse click an entry from the Start-->Programs list, then drag it to the desktop and select "Create shortcut." Try that.

I had too many folders and shortcuts on my desktop so I created two new folders to hold them in. Those two new folders now sit on my desktop. Is that a problem?

I think what @Cytherian is trying to say, is that when you were moving the shortcuts/files into a folder, you might have caused an error? I'm not sure myself how that could work.

Try downloading ccleaner and fixing your registry with it, never hurts to try.

I think moving around stuff could've caused a problem. As my first post stated, after moving some things around I did lose sound for Malwarebytes. I've had some other issues as well over the years so I suspect that my PC is somewhat corrupted. Like most people I'm at a loss when it comes to tech stuff, but as long as things are working well enough there's really no problem I guess. We'll see if this issue returns.

Then you have to double-click into each folder to get to the shortcuts.

I think you'd be better off doing a few things:
  • Reduce Desktop shortcuts - you shouldn't need dozens of shortcuts. For those programs you seldom use, just navigate to the Start-->Programs menu and find the program that way.
  • Enable Quick Launch - Not only can you put the most heavily used shortcuts on display on the lower left, you can then stack a bunch more that are revealed when clicking on ">>". This is a great way to condense the list of shortcuts and make them very accessible, no matter how many windows are open on your desktop.
  • Organize Program Files shortcuts - For seldom used programs, this is the best place to have them. They should be there by default when you install programs. You can also create new ones there. I create some top level folders, like "Utilities", "Microsoft", "Media", etc., where I move program folders and shortcuts to help organize them.
  • Consider Rocket Dock - This is a "Mac" like tool bar that resides on your desktop and can be hidden off to the side, revealed when you move your mouse cursor to the edge. I use it quite a lot and it's a terrific way to reduce desktop shortcuts.

The website lied to me. Works fine on my 7 64bit. I can't really find a good use for it though, I put it on the right side of screen and only kept the trash can, settings, control panel.

I use it like a desktop based Quick Launch. My most frequently used programs are on my Task Bar docked Quick Launch, but I have Rocket Dock hidden off to the left. It contains several programs that I sometimes launch when I have other windows already open. Those would normally be desktop shortcuts that I'd have to get to by minimizing all windows. Rocket Dock helps take care of that.
