unable to create Visa recovery disc

Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1, IE8

I spent at least 12 hours burning iso, re-installing Vista, updating etc etc etc.
I just finished activating it by phone.
So, I decided to create a recovery disc so I won't be facing the same predicment again, ( I was just a computer beginner back then.)
I follow this tutorial published by Brink :

Problem started in
9. Take ownership and Allow your user account Full Control (permissions) of the recdisc.exe file at this location (step 7).

In my C:/Windows/System32, I don't have recdisc.exe. I have recdisc

So, when I right click at recdisc, Take Ownership was not available.
If I skipped that and continued, when it came to Copy and Replace, it asked for confirmation, and when I clicked continue, it wouldn't let me. Said I don't have the permission.
I just re-installed the darn OS and I was the only user, hence the only admin.

So, what should I have done ?

Hello T-4-2,

"Take Ownership" is not in the context menu by default. The link in step 9 shows you how to add it. You will have to take ownership of the recdisc.exe file with your user acccount first, then set permissions of the recdisc.exe file to Allow your user account Full Control.

O, Brink, cut me some slack. :cry:

I know I have to install Take Ownership option in my right click Context menu. I had been using the option since 2 years ago.

There is no recdisc.exe in system32 window. Just recdisc. Please see my screenshot posted above. And, when I right clicked at recdisc, Takeownership option was not there.

LOL, no problem mate. I was just poking at you a bit.

recdisc.exe and recdisc would be the same file. It's just that you do not have known file extensions set to show in your Folder Options for why you do not see .exe at the end.

If you like, you may just manually take ownership and set permissions since it's just that one file. "Take Ownership" wouldn't be added to .exe files in the take ownership tutorial since it would replace "Run as administrator".

Yes, unchecking the Hide known extension revealed the exe.

Question :
Why can't I drag and drop the recdisc.exe out from system32 to desktop, and replace it with the new one that was extracted from the zipped file ?
Will that work ?
Manual take ownership is TOOO confusing.

You could, but you will still have to take ownership and set permissions of it first since it's system file.

Thank you for your help.

I am now installing the SP2, then installing IE9, then who knows, probably another truck-load of updates awaiting .
After that, I'll consider the recovery disc tutorial again.
