At the black screen during boot I saw a very quick scrawl across the screen which had something like "configure/control set" in it. Never seen that before. Then my screen went into configure update as if I was asked to restart after a Windows Update. The 1-3 process flew by in seconds--so fast that I didn't see the 3 stage process take place. Upon boot I found that IE8 was unusually slow in starting for a minute but now is okay. Folders and other things opened fine.
The only thing I can think of is that I downloaded and installed a new Windows Update Agent Sunday, though no restart was requested. I also remember that Tuesday's Windows Update was just a Defender definiton and I was extremely surprised at how fast it downloaded and installed--so fast that I wondered how it could've created a restore point. Before shutdown and reboot I also downloaded a new Defender definiton today.
I scanned with Malwarebytes and Avast! just yesterday and nothing came up.
Thanks,
VFN
