Deleteing factory image and recovering the space

Hello;
I have a HP desktop running Vista Home Premium 64; it came with a factory restore image (D:/) it is almost 12 gigs with 10.5 used. I would like to delete it and recover the unused space to my c:/ drive. If I delete the D drive in disk management what is the procedure to recover it to the c: drive???

Use paragon partitioner. I'll se if I can find the image, burn it to a disk, boot off the disk, follow prompts to delete the partition and then increase the window partition. Its fairly easy.

note- by deleting the factory restore, you can no longer restore to factory image. you will need an o/s disk, or you will need to backup the partition/or create a ghost image of your pc for use in the event you need to recover/reinstall windows

Deleting the recovery partition is not a good idea at all. You might need it to restore your machine someday. How much hard drive space do you have on C:? If you are running out of room, check your temp folders and other unneeded files and folders for items that can be safely deleted. Running "Disk Cleanup" utility is a good way to clear out the clutter. That utility will suggest items that can be safely deleted.

Also check how much drive space is taken up by System Restore. You can regain a few gigs by clearing that area out.

I don't recommend messing with that at all if something happens to your pc you will be screwed. You can go shrink the partition 1gb if you want but I say don't touch it and leave it on.

Thank you all for your reply; I am somewhat bewildered as I started the thread on 6/24 and nobody responded. Now after one month I get hits. Any how; I know the positive and negatives of blowing away the recovery partition. I have a full image back up, so it really does not matter. I had some spare time and I was "just thinking":sarc: As it stand now the parttion is on my HD.

Depends where it is.

If your recov partition is on the RIGHT as viewed in disk management window - you should be able to delete it and extend windows partition - just using Vista disk management.

If it on the left - you need a 3rd party app.

Make sure you delete the partition first to end up with 'unallocated space' - 'freespace' is not good enough. Then right click on the C partition and 'Extend Volume'.

Before you delete the D partition, make sure that it is not the 'active' partition but that C is the active partition.

^ If he were to completely back up the recovery partition onto an external hard drive and then follow your recommendations, could the partition be re-created again at a later date and the back up copied over to function as if it were always there? Would it be a good idea to just disable the HP Recovery Manager rather than uninstall it, and then simply enable it when needed?

Yes, probably, but you have to know what you are doing.

Depending on how the oem set it up - you would need to re-establish a method to access the image it contains - either by booting directly into a .wim on the recov partition itself , or by applying the recovery .wim using some other method.

It shouldn't be difficult for an enthusiast.

You do realise the OP posted a long while ago.
