Can't open photo files or PS5

Yesterday I found I am unable to open photo files via my desktop. I can open the folder; but when I click on a photo I get a box pop-up that says: "Windows Explorer has stopped working." within the box a little blue bar runs across as if it is checking, below that it says: "Windows is checking for a solution to this problem." At which point windows restarts with NO fix. I also can not open up Adobe Photoshop PS5 without a similar message.

I would LOVE to fill out all the information on my computer via this forum but that was Greek to me. I am running a factory made Dell with Windows Vista Home Premium. Intel (R) Core 2 Duo CPU [email protected] ghz 3.0 GB ram, ATI Radeon HD 2400 ... if that means anything to anyone.

I run AVG virus protection, updated every 24-hours. I have ran a virus scan on that and on Spybot and have come up clean. Any help at this point will be SOOO greatly appreciated.

It sounds like some of your file associations for image files have gone wrong.

Previously, when you double-clicked on an image file what program was automatically executed?

Rather than double-clicking on the file, try right-mouse clicking on it. From there, you'll have a menu list pop-up. Select "Open With...". From there, you will be able to select from a choice of programs to look at the image file. You might want to try opening the image file with a different program than you normally use.

Regarding Adobe PS5, are you saying you can't open image files with that program by clicking on the file, or are you finding that when you try to simply open Adobe PS5 it will hang (not start)?

I can open a folder on my desktop which has my photos, clicking on a photo once in the folder hangs up windows. Any right click "open with" option also hangs up windows. If I try to straight up open PS5, it hangs up windows.

Each file type has a default association with it. On your computer, when you'd click on an image file, what program would be launched to open it (prior to your having this problem)? What was the last thing you did to your system before this issue started happening (like installing new software, running Windows update, Adobe update, etc)?

Also, you are mentioning opening a folder on your desktop. What about other folders, such as in your "My Documents" or "My Pictures" folders? Are you able to open up other documents there (like MS Word, text, etc), or is it just image files?

In my Documents, all text files open, MSWord, Tiny Word, Notepad...etc. Photos however I get the error.

Prior to this happening we had a power outage the afternoon before, my computer was running at the time and when I restarted it took a long time to complete a scan-disk.

Ah now this is important. You probably had something damaged. Hopefully any damage is related to the OS and not the hardware.:huh:

That's very useful information, Terri. So, something has definitely gone wrong with your file association for photos. I suspect that if you were working on an image file at the time in Photoshop, that the hard drive suddenly stopping in the middle of doing work caused this problem. Your system files may be fine, but as townsbg suggested it's not a bad idea to run the System File Checker command (described in the link) just to be certain.

If Adobe Photoshop 5 will NOT open by clicking on the PS5 icon (not clicking on a PSD file), then it is suffering from some corruption. I don't think you can repair it, but instead will have to reinstall it. You probably have some file associations with image files that will automatically launch PS5, and this is why you're running into this problem.

Since you have MS Office installed, try launching Picture Manager. Using that, navigate to a folder where there are some images and see if you get a thumbnail display. Then try double-clicking on an image and see if it loads. If the photos display just fine, then this confirms PS5 as being the culprit.
