Replacing bad hard drive

Ok, I have a hard drive that my system is showing needs to be replaced soon. When I install the new hard drive, hopefully before the old one dies, can I transfer all of the data, including the OS onto the new one? Or can I install the OS on the new drive and then trasfer updates and other files to the new hard drive. I have seen cloning programs that seem to do this, as well as freeware programs.....do I stay away from freeware??

    Weakest part of my computer is the graphics chipset. Only ever used a laptop. Also use USB Freeview TV Card Lenovo Docking Station External Speakers Other bits a pieces as needed
