shows no system installed

A friend has a Gateway GT5670 Desk top while he was making a recovery disk his kid shut it down and now it won't boot up to the Vista, it will not recognize any system installed, F8 repeatedly he can get into Advanced Boot Options BUT System Repair is NOT an option. He does not have any disk that came with computer. Any thoughts i could pass along ??

There can be many reasons. The MBR can be corrupted, the C partition can be deactivated, etc. You can inspect (and possibly correct) the situation with the bootable CD of Partition Wizard (last entry on the webpage).

If nothing else, you can ask Gateway to send an installation disc. They used to do that for a S&H charge of $20.

Another possibility is to reinstall with any Vista installation disc (must be same edition - e.g. Home Premium) and activate it with the product key that is on the COA sticker (should be in the back of the PC).
