Slipstream Dell Vista x86 SP1 DVD (VLK!) with SP2 BUT WITHOUT LOSING PRE-ACTIVATION!

Hello,

I'm wondering...

Can I create my own VLK setup DVD for Vista Business x86 SP1 (Dell), without losing the pre-activation??

The official (!) Dell VLK DVD will automatically give an activated OS after installation (when on Dell hardware; otherwise, it won't install).

I wish to have the same, but with a Vista SP2 DVD.

Should http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/230249-sliptream-vista-sp2.html keep the automatic activation?

Some of my clients do NOT have a COA for Vista, only XP. I AM ALLOWED to install Vista for these clients but I WILL NEED A PRE-ACTIVATED SP2 installation DVD - which Dell does not offer :(

Why I really really really need the SP2 version? I need to do a repair upgrade to 'fix' activation for my master system (which I clone and roll out to all new clients). Re-creating this master is impossible, I REALLY need the pre-activation!

Sigh. Google'ing: slipstream vista sp2 (royalty OR VLK) dvd -"windows xp" did not offer many tips.

And even your manual (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/230249-sliptream-vista-sp2.html) shows people having problems with activation / serial requests.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO? I also asked for help, here: Corporate Dell Vista SP1 x86 DVD: Slipstream SP2 without prompting activation or serial dialogue? - Microsoft OS Forum - Software & Operating Systems - Dell Community (but that did not turn up anything I could immediately use... :s).

Pretty please? ; ) Thank you and...

Peace!

Devvie

There is no such thing as a Dell VLK disk.
What I suspect you mean is the Recovery disk.

In general, it is not possible to slipstream into Recovery disks. - and in general, Slipstreamed disks for Vista and Win7 don't work very well, if at all.

[edit] - and NO, you are NOT allowed to install Vista onto machines with an XP COA using ANY form of disk, except the proper Upgrade, Full Retail or Full OEM licenses [/edit]

Thanx for the reply.

No, it is not a recovery disc. It's an official VLK Vista x86 SP1 DVD by Dell. Contains 'regular' pre-activated Windows Business, fully licensed. It will automatically activate, without serial dialogue, on all Slic Dell hardware.

My Dell hardware is fully licensed for MY Dell copy of Vista (and vice versa;)

The problem is: how to keep pre-activated (slic?) state of the original DVD, but with Vista SP2 integrated? This, so I can (finally) run my repair upgrade...

Peace!

Sad, but true. Still, in this specific case, I have no other choice. Or do you know how to remove SP2 from my Vista? No, Add/Remove Programs won't work :PP

YES I AM ALLOWED TO DO THIS! I have official business hardware and the official Dell VLK'd Vista SP1 DVD. REALLY, it's covered by a MASSIVE license with 10,000s of clients!

EVEN if the COA says XP, the Vista License IS VALID AND PAYED FOR! TRUST me in this. And I don't use it for *any* Dell hardware - ONLY a selected set of devices that ARE COVERED by MS / Dell licenses. If I'd freelance with this, I'd be on the streets by tomorrow : >

Pfew :)

Volume License Keys are UPGRADE KEYS ONLY, and are NOT sold by the equipment manufacturers - the manufacturer provides the base OEM License, and it's up to the customer to apply a Volume License.

:> I might be wrong with calling it a "vlk" installation dvd.

I don't know how else to call it! But it's an official dell vista sp1 business dvd with which I can install Windows from scratch. Activation isn't required, for it is slic activated (?). The DVD is not pirated, but truly genuine. The hardware + dvd are from the same company. I am NOT allowed to install it on other Dell hardware, other than the ones bought by 'us' - in which contract / form that is, I really don't know. I'm in the end of the chain, but all bosses assure me that what we are doing really is legal. A big company like this does not make mistakes with this.

So please correct me: what kind of installation medium am I using? Might make my searches more to the point ; ))

THANK you and...

Peace!

:)
What you almost certainly have is the standard Dell Recovery disk set - the first of which is a pretty much vanilla SP1 disk, using an OEM_SLP Key embedded using an Unattend.txt file.

Such a disk relies on the SLIC table in the machine's BIOS, as well as the Key, and certificates in the OS, to self-activate the installation. The SLIC table is different for each manufacturer, and for each version of Windows - which is why I said that you cannot use the disk on machines which came pre-installed with XP (or Win7)

Just as a check - if you have a Dell machine with the OS installed by that disk, the Key will be
368Y7-49YMQ-VRCTY-3V3RH-WRMG7
(and no, I'm not breaking any rules by posting it here, it's common knowledge)

If it's any different, then I'd be interested to see an MGADiag report produced by such a disk - such a report contains no confidential information. (There's always the chance that I'm talking out of the wrong orifice!)

As far as your immediate problem is concerned - why do you feel the need to do a repair install? - the fix I proposed in my response in your other thread should work. - especially as that machine is a Hewlett--Packard, not a Dell!

Bedtime, for long, by now : ) THANK you for your response - THIS MAKES SENSE :>>

I will investigate in detail tomorrow, I still have two 'good' machines lying around, installed with the Recovery disk (which, to me personal, sounds like an Image Restoration disk - but I won't quibble about semantics now:). I will check their serials.

I will also re-visit your other reply and RE-examine it. Sorry?

:) Thank you,

You can buy a disk with Vista SP2 on it from Microsoft for a few dollars. Obviously, to install it, you need to have an activated Vista SP1. I have no idea if this helps.
