I know that a lot of people accidentally delete their recycle bin - but in this case I noticed that the icon was missing - and only the icon - the words "recycle bin" are there, and I can open the folder and use the operations, but the picture icon of a trash can is missing. Any ideas?

The desktop icon is just that, an Icon (Shortcut) the recycle.bin folder is not deleted.
So, just recreate the icon & your done!

Are you saying that the Bin itself is actually there, and it's just that the picture/icon doesn't show up? Like it's just invisible, but the nametag is still there?
If you can't get it fixed any other way, then try this, see if it comes back.

In addition, you may be able to use step 5 in the tutorial below to restore the default icons of both the Recycle Bin (empty) and Recycle Bin (full) icons.
