I unchecked its box at msconfig System Configurations > Startup tab, but it continues to appear in the taskbar.
Hello, right click an empty space on the Taskbar and select properties. Check out your settings in there, you may have to customize.

If you actually mean the notification area (the area on the right by the clock) you have to go to search by the start button, type notification and then set it from there.
