PC still slow after formatting hard drive

Hello everyone, i've had my PC for about 5yrs now and after it got low on disk space it started freezing alot, so i decided to restore it back to factory settings. All programs and everything else were gone (just like I wanted) and it still has problems freezing. I keep getting the "not responding" message when im on Firefox and even when im not online and try to open certain programs that i installed. The programs that i've installed so far are Ccleaner, MBAM, and Avira antivirus. I don't think the programs are the problem because it started freezing before I installed any of those programs. Could it be my hard drive going bad?
I have a Compaq and im running Windows Vista Home Basic

While I was reading your post, the first thought that came to mind was a failing hard drive. It would be my suggestion to back up your stuff, NOW.

Thanx, this list really helped alot! I wasn't able to do everything from the list because i was too cautious but I did do alot of them and it did help! My PC is runnin alot faster now! I do seem to notice that alot of the lagging that still occurs, happens when I have windows updates, what would be a good way to configure this?
