Un-Hide File Names in Pictures in Windows Explorer

I hope someone can help me out, and I apologise if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find an answer to my problem when I looked.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP2. When I am using files in "Pictures" they automatically show up without the file name underneath the thumbnail (in any kind of icons display). I know to right click in a blank space within the folder and then on view, then untick hide file names, but as I have over two hundred folders on the computer, and many hundred more on an external drive, this is very time consuming. Is there a way of making it so that instead of "hide file names" being ticked as default it is NOT ticked as default?

Hope someone can help, and I will be very grateful if you can.

Thank you, while that did seem as if it would solve the problem it didn't.

If I select a blank space in "Pictures" and then follow the instructions it doesn't cascade down into all the sub folders, it only names the folders and files on the level I am at.

Is the problem here simply that Microsoft have made an assumption about what I want, and haven't left the option to change it from what they want the default to be? It seems if I want the folder to behave as pictures and videos (which I do, as they are pictures and videos) then I'm not allowed to see the file names without manually turning them on in every folder and sub folder and sub sub folder etc.

If I change the folder type to all items it solves the problem, but then the default view is list, not icons, so I then have to manually change to icons, slightly less time consuming, but still I have to change something.

Am I alone in wanting to see the file or folder name along with the picture?

In the Customize tab, did you checkmark "also apply ......subfolders"?

Thank you for all your help everyone, I had actually already found that tutorial yesterday, but it still only changes the setting in the folder I am in, it does not apply it to folders within that folder, that themselves contain more folders and files. I tried changing everything right from the top of the directory in "pictures", but that didn't work, so I tried the next level of folders down, but it just won't cascade downwards, the setting only changes the current folder, I think because the customize command is the bit that says apply to sub levels etc, but the ticking and unticking of "hide file names" is not in that bit, but in the view menu, which seems to apply separately to every single individual folder.

Perhaps I need a different file management system that is not created by Microsoft, does anyone have any suggestions?!

I wonder if you have permissions for all the folders.

Right click on a folder and select Properties. Look under the Security tab and see who has permissions. If you're not listed for Full Control, you can edit it to give yourself Full Control. I believe it will ask you if you want to apply that to all sub folders but I can't remember for sure. This is assuming you're logged in as the administrator.
