System restore during Vista bootup

Every now & then when I boot up my Vista PC resorts to requesting a system restore even though in my previous session I installed no new software and shut down successfully.

Any thoughts on where to begin debugging?

I wasn't awrae of this option. But since it only happens 10% of the time do you suggest I boot with BOOT LOG until the SYSTEM RESTORE message occurs again? ie, Won't this option slow down my system during each session?

It's not that my system wants to create a new restore point upon booting but instead it wants to use the last restore point to boot from. This appears random to me since I hadn't installed any software and shutdown normally during the session previous to my bootup restore problem.

But let me review your suggestion and see if I uncover any surprising settings.

With any unique problems, the first thing that I do is run a full anti virus scan. I then download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. Although this is most likely not the cause in this situation, it is always good to be sure.

If that is negative go to search type event viewer and put the cursor in the left panel and aminstrative. In the right panel make note of errors and critical at the time of the problem.

Also, make a chkdsk to ensure that your hard drive is up to par. A bad HD may be triggering this anamoly.

Good ideas, thanks. Just wish I understood why it appears as a random event for my PC to want to use a restore point on bootup and other times it boots normally.

Actually that is what gave me the lead on the bad HD. May be a small problem, that only affects the System ocassionally. If you pass, Ill give you the long test to be sure.
If you fail, that is the problem. The chkdsk is easy and quick.

I gave you the quick easy test. If it failed we know for sure. Lets take the much more accurate test now.

Hard drive scan usings SeaTools - SeaToolsfor Windows | Seagate - Both long and shorttests
If you pass this the next step is the event viewer. Post, when up to that step.

I will give you a small insight to my next idea. If not the Hard Drive and no help from the event viewer. Most likely the registry. The best way to fix that is to do a system restore from 1 week before the problem began.

Dont jump ahead, my friend.
Do the hard drive
Then event viewer (post and Ill tell you how)
Then the System Restore.
