Unable to open files or download

Hiya,
I am unable to save any type of file or download. The save/open box pops up and it appears to save (all be it very quickly), but when I look for it it is nowhere to be found or I get a message telling me that the shortcut is nowhere to be found. I have tried a sfc scan and it tells me there is a problem in c:windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.Log,here's a link to that log https://skydrive.live.com/redir.asp...129FEF3205D61F2A!122&authkey=!AIK_4O6lilKtROE I am using Vista Home Premium and Explorer 8.

Just found an error message that may help. I tried to save a word document that was sent to me. As I said before it looks like everything is going okay and saving, but then it can not be found the message reads Missing shortcut???

Probably a virus
Run a full anti virus scan. Dont forget to update it first

Hiya the Vista came already on the laptop, so we have no cds/dvds. I had to close the log as I thought I had done something wrong by putting on the forum, the Microsoft Answers took my post down that it was in and I didn't want it to happen on this site. Thanks for all your help so far x

The easy way to go might be to use the restoration partition to return to factory specs or to buy a DVD for cost from the computer manufacturer to reinstall.
Be sure to save your stuff

Before going back to square one, if you haven't tried Malwarebytes antimalware yet, it's worth a shot. Sometimes it picks up funky settings in the Registry. For example, for awhile I couldn't delete any file in Explorer, but I could on the command line. There was some setting about NoModify in the Explorer settings in the Registry. Malwarebytes picked it right off. Doesn't always help, but it's free.

If as you say, you cannot download, try to download Malwarebytes to a thumb drive, then see if you can transfer to your computer.
