My Graphics Card Cooler (home made)

Hi,

Just letting my friends (actually depends on if you like me) at Vistax64.com know about the home made cooler i made for my graphics card.

EDIT: pictures below.

Materials used: (will differ to other cards)
1X AMD Athlon II Cooler (Aluminium Heatsink, took off fan.)
2X 1/8" 4-40 threaded rods
4X M6 Nuts
4X M4 Washers (small base)
4X M4 (large base)
1X a saw that can cut through metal



Reasons why I am doing this: My HD 6450 1GB was overclocked higher than previously maxed with MSI afterburner and MAX temps in games were 64-72c

The stock Gigabyte cooler w/ fan is small.

Hopefully the NEW home made cooler will do better.

Results are pleasing:

I used MSI Kombustor and a 30min stress test to record temps

STOCK HEATSINK
PC idle: 52c

HOME MADE
PC idle: 49c (in picture)

STOCK HEATSINK
MSI Kombustor: 72c @ 851/1010

HOME MADE HEATSINK
MSI Kombustor: 57c @ 851/1010 (see picture below)

Just make sure all your memory chips are cooled too

Hey Patonb!!!

the memory chips were not covered by the stock heatsink BUT the fins of my new one do. i do not however, have any thermal pads.

Indeed, although it could use a bit more touch up's like shave the rods down at the back of the cards, 1 rod hits my northbridge heatsink and might be moving heat onto-off both heatsinks :O

Some thermal pads on the memory

smooth the edges off the cut section of cooler :D

other than that it works well :D

Ok here is an update:

Temps are GREAT!!! :D

Mass effect 2 is my most demanding game, Old temps hit 70-74c

Now with ALL my games (from light to demanding graphics)

ALL temps NEVER go over 60!!!

The reason was new thermal paste on my NEW homemade heatsink.
