I have a Compaq 32 bit system with only 1 GB ram to run vista. it is very sluggish and sometimes freezes because i think it cant cope with what i want it to do. it is about 4 years old and i was wondering if a ram upgarde would stop the freezing and the crashing and make the PC run smoother. any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome
I note that you have Vista 32 bit. The most additional Ram that you can use is 1-2GB. It would certainly help,. You have an older computer and the most ram that can be used with 32 bit is 3GB. I think the additional ram used in conjuction with these other suggestions would be your second best alternative. The best alternative, is costly, a new computer with 64 bit Seven, but I do know in these economic times that may be an expensive alternative

If you have an external drive where you can store an image backup and would enjoy experimenting, you might want to try making an image backup of your Vista system, then installing Windows Seven Ultimate. I think it's pretty much agreed it does a better job of installing a lean system on older PCs than Vista. Also has better handling of resources, caching, and prefetching.

You can install Windows Seven with no product key for a trial period. Then again the ram is probably cheaper than getting Windows Seven. :)

But if you try it, you may be hooked. :)
