Program-directory interface problem

I have a big problem with the program-directory interaction.

Using a program and connecting to a directory to load a file, the program aborts. This happens with several of my programs and is becoming more frequent. Once the file has been loaded, all works normal, also saving the file after use. The problem is not specific to any drive/directory.

The directory operation on it's own seems to work normally, although very slow
at times.

I once received a numeric error message, which I have since lost, and 'googling' this message I was able to download a correction utility which was so complicated I did not risk to use it for fear of immobilizing by PC totally.

I frequently run 'Registry Booster' and always have around 5-7 errors.

The biggest problem is that I do not have the original Vista Home installation CD's as I inherited this laptop from a Norwegian friend who died here in Brazil a couple of years ago. My Vista is also in Norwegian.

I have many special programs on my laptop I am afraid to lose and it would be a gigantic job to re-install it all,so I was hoping not to have to buy and install a new Vista operating system.

Grateful for help...

Tore

As an after thought, but equally imporatant. Make a full anti virus scan and download and make a full and updated scan with Malwarebytes. Do this prior to any other step. Lets be 100% certain, that this is not caused by Malware, which can get worse

Thanks both for your advice. The registry scan I am using is recommended by Microsoft, even here at the heading of this forum?

But,I take your advice and I am running the system scan/repair now and await the result.

I do not know what scan you are using so I can speak freely. Vista and Seven do not need registry scans. At best they do not provide any real improvement in the performance of your computer. In the worse case scenario they can cause problems.

Ccleaner removes temporary files and such, even the registry portion of that program is not needed.

I have done the FSC command and also an updated scan with Malwarebytes, but my problem still exists. When several of my programs are trying to load a file from any of my directories it either freezes or aborts the program. I really think one of the important .dll files are corrupted.

Did SFC show errors?
I agree with the repair as suggested in my first post and mentioned again by Yard Dog

As I mentioned in my first thread,I inherited this laptop from a friend but did not get the original Vista installation CD's (in Norwegian) so I don't think I can do a repair program.

I read through the comprehensive SFC log but did not see any errors. None were displayed at the end of the scan.

See attached messages, loading the program and the lack of files shown in the directory when trying to load a file. (the directory has many files but not showing)

Seems certain programs have more frequent failures than others, other programs work without problems. A real puzzle... Greateful for any help or suggestions..

You should try to back up your stuff, as suggested in one of my early posts.
We can, then, try to restore with the restoration partition, get an installation DVD, for cost, about $25.00 U.S. or buy an upgrade version of Seven for about $125.00 U.S.

Only problem is my Vista is in Norwegian,I'd prefer English, but would there be a conflict?
Is an installation CD to big to collect over the internet? Doubt if they have English versions here in Brazil. I could pay by VISA and download over night if necessary.

Since, you question is rather specific, to your special situation, it may be best to call your computer manufacturer for that information.
I know if it were me, Id go with an upgrade version of Windows Seven. It is the same as the full version, but costs a lot less. I have Seven, I like it and it is the most current Windows. Vista will soon become unsupported by Microsoft and then any problems or questions will not be answered by them. Good luck.
