What is the software you're burning with?

Have you checked for a later driver for the drive from the manufacturer's website. Typically, when you buy a drive, it doesn't have the latest driver and/or firmware.

well, i burnt it with Nero, and i try to read the disc after the completion, i was using the older external drive by the way, and it ran ok. but like a 2 years later, i try to read it with my newest drive, it didn't work :(
not sure with the driver though, i thought all external drive kinda plug and play, and the drive is pretty up to date. i however was doing it before installing service pack too cause part of the reason i have to bring back those discs was because my computer crashed and had to reinstall everything.

many thanks!!!

If you have Nero InCD driver installed on your system all bets are off. Every video forum I'm on the first thing they tell newbies is to get rid of it. Use Imgburn to burn DVD discs. For CD CDBurnerXP or Burrrn may be fine. But I do all DVD burning with Imgburn.

Uninstall is not good enough to remove Nero. You need to get the Nero Uninstall or Cleanup tool to get it all off your system.

Nero Clean Tool is what you need.

Nero seems more nasty than I aware of... many thanks for the advice!!!

The only driver you get with the drive is the Windows driver. The manufacturers issue new drivers or firmware when problems arise.

I have had Nero InCd in various versions installed for 4 years and it hasn't affected any Nero application operations. I use both Vista and Win 7.

I monitor in the Nero user forum. Go to nero.com and then the Community. Go to User Forum and post in the subforum which is appropriate for what you're doing- for instance, if you're using Nero Vision\Video, post there. I'll help you there.

is the operative phrase. Most people start out with Nero. I did. But when you want to start doing things your way, it gets in the way. InCD is lost data waiting to happen. To me a basic litmus test is, does the software force you to download a removal or cleanup tool to get it all off your system? If the answer is "yes" then ask yourself why this is.

Up until v10, Nero used an installation routine called Polaris, I think. As a result, you needed the clean tool to do an uninstall. V10 and v11 use a Windows .msi so you just uninstall it like any other Windows Software. The latest version of InCd also uses a .msi.

I wonder which software lets you do things your way.

Finally fixed after how many versions? I think 5 was the first version I had. Needed clean tool to get rid of it. Same with 6 Ultimate. Nero is a "kitchen sink" converter burner package for those who don't yet know anything about doing video conversions.

As for other software, there's too many to list. The tool to use depends on the conversions and authoring desired. Many players and set top boxes can play the files without any authoring. That's the whole idea. Cut down on all this processing.

Visit the sites I noted. There are databases full of free tools and guides to use them.
Nero is fine to get started. Holding yourself down to it because you shelled out some money is foolish. There are better tools to be had and most of them, aside from motion menu and effects authoring tools, are free.

As I mentioned, you should post the problem in the Nero forum. I can go into much more detail with you by doing things like looking at your burn logs. That's where this issue really belongs. It's not a Vista issue.

I've been handling Nero problems for almost 4 years.

You made your pitch once already.

Four years ago is about when I quit using Nero. There comes a time to move on to more advanced software and techniques. Again, there's no reason not to start with it. It comes with many burners after all. But it's not designed as an advanced tool. It's a "one size fits all" application. It has its uses. But if one wants to progress with multimedia and burning there comes a time to learn something about the file formats, codecs, frame rates, audio channels, Direct Show, AviSynth, and all the other minutia that gives you greater control.

I agree whole heartedly with you if a person is really into video or audio but most people are just trying to burn some family video or slides. The type of problem described here is usually readily fixed with a little information. I see these kind of problems all the time. The point is that it's not a Vista problem. I really don't know what the reluctance is to take the problem to the appropriate forum for resolution.

Go ahead and post in the Nero forum anyhow. I can probably resolve the issue by discussion.
