Copying files to new user profile

At one point directions are to select all files and folders in my existing user account, EXCEPT Ntuser.dat Ntuser.dat.log Ntuser.ini I do not have Ntuser.dat.log. I have Ntuser.dat.LOG1 and Ntuser.dat.LOG2. LOG1 has 256 KB and was created today. LOG2 has 0 KB and was created 9-4-2010. I created two new admn. accounts to do this procedure. I logged into the account which I'm just using for transferring the files. Can anyone help! While we are at it does anyone know why I created paragraphs in this post and when I posted it everything came out all run together?

I am not transferring from Win 7 to Vista. I am transferring on the same computer to a new user account in Vista. I seem, to have lost some functionality in my right-click context menu. Have tried everything. It was thought that perhaps if I created a new user account that might do it. Then transfer the files and folder from my existing account (this account), with the exception of ntuser.dat, ntuser.dat.log, ntuser.ini. Please read my first post more closely because your answer doesn't seem to fit my questions at all. Thanks!

I know. When I bought Seven, I tested it out on my Vista, as I described, and it worked great.

But what I asked about was those ntuser log files, not how to move the files, altho I do appreciate the heads up about this program.

With the easy transfer, you select what to transfer.
Just transfer what you want, settings, desktop, favorites, etc. With easy transfer your question is moot.

But I don't have the ntuser.dat.log file that was given as one of the 3 NOT to transfer. I don't want to end up transferring the wrong files and thus corrupting my new profile with the same thing that might be causing the existing problem. How do those two files I do have (ntuser.dat.LOG1 and ntuser.dat.LOG2) correlate with this ntuser.dat.log? By the way, what is Live Transfer? I have something I bought awhile back and have never opened. It is called Smart PC-Link. It says on it, "The most convenient use of data transfer solution. Driverless and very easy to use. Fully Plug-and-Play." Would this be equivalent to Live Transfer? P.S. I want to transfer everything except those three files that the directions said NOT to transfer.

Why is what I type not staying in paragraph format, like I type it, and why do I get this " every time I put quotes around something?

Easy Trasfer is free, it allows you to transfer all the user information to a new profile, in Seven or Vista. If you are concerned about transferring the problem to another account, back up what you already have. Use Macrium Reflect, back up on an external hard drive. If you do not like the results of the transfer, just use Reflect to go back the way you were.
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

The posting problem is probably a keyboard problem. I would check the device manager and update the keyboard driver.

You are obviously a computer tech. I am obviously a home user in a novice catageory. I'm just not understanding you at all. Can you please tell me about these ntuser log files? I can easily believe the formatting problems could be keyboard, but wonder why this forum is the only place it's happening. I went to that Windows Easy Transfer site, but at the end it says that you can transfer files and settings using a network, USB Easy Transfer Cable, removable media, or an external hard drive. Would my Smart PC-Link be comparable to USB Easy Transfer Cable? I would have no interest in using a backup program as you suggest because they confuse me so badly I'm not even positive I'm doing the backup right. I presently am using Paragon (paid version). Was actually going to check into Macrium because this Paragon is an absolute fright! I would say this program is for advanced users, not for home users who are not advanced.

I just uninstalled the driver for my Logitech keyboard. I assumed after restart I would get that icon in the taskbar telling me that a driver was being downloaded, but that didn't happen. When I went to Device Manager there was only one item under Keyboard and that was my Logitech keyboard. Now it just shows HID Keyboard Device. Even my SetPoint software is no longer showing my keyboard as installed. I'm writing this to see if the formatting works, but if you'd like to give some advice on how I get my Logitech keyboard reinstalled, that would be great.

It appears that uninstalling the driver didn't do any good as still no format.

Thank you Lottiemansion. I guess rich46 is done with me. I just uninstalled and reinstalled SetPoint and now I have my keyboard back. I will take a screenshot of this and then post it. Hopefully I've got my paragraphs back! Sure funny tho, I've been in several other forums and this is absolutely the only place where everything gets run together and I get " when I put quotes around something.

Would you know anything about that ntuser.dat.log business I was asking about?

Ahaa!!! My formatting is back. Know what it seems to have been? This darned NoScript in Firefox. I clicked on it and selected to allow vista64.com and I've got format "back" !!!!

OK,

Back to the point in hand.

Try the easy transfer utility from Rich46's first post or the one in Accessories/ System tools on the start menu & post back once you have used it. OK?

P.S.

Is your software installed for all users on the PC?

Otherwise you could be some "Start" "All Programs" menu items missing on the new account!

I can't answer the question about whether my software is installed for all users on the PC. I would assume so. Is there some way to tell?

I'm sure I'm the dummy, but I'm still stumped.

I'm not asking "how" to transfer files. That might have been a question following up, but at this point I want to know about ntuser files.

The Microsoft instruction page for copying files to a new user profile, #6, says to select all of the files and folders in the present profile except the following:
• Ntuser. dat
• Ntuser dat. log
• Ntuser.ini

It would be my understanding that these files would contain whatever is causing the errors in my existing right-click context menu, so I don't want to transfer them to the new account.

The only problem is that I do NOT have the Ntuser.dat.log file at all in my present user account. I have the two LOG files I have described previously. Since they do not match exactly what was described by Microsoft, I want to know what to do. Do these two LOG1 and LOG2 files take the place of Ntuser.dat.log, or are they something else completely. Should they be transferred to the new profile, or not transferred.

If I could have looked in my present profile folder and found this Ntuser.dat.log file I would have had this thing done and would know if it worked to correct the problems I'm having.
