Custom search providers

Does anyone know what MS have done with these.

This link used to provide a way to create your own search providers (after creating a search for the word "TEST" in the web site you wanted to use).

The link now returns an error, and the link that used to appear on the Gallery taking you to this page is also gone.

Is this the page you need ?

I have looked, and i got the error page also. this is all i can find, while i am there , i am checking out available IE addons , as i do not usually use IE . Sorry.

Unfortunately no.

That page used to have a link at the foot of it which took you to the link I posted in the original post. That let you create your own Custom searches. (For instance I created on for my local library). You set it up as I indicated, then you could search any of your selected searches straight from the entry box.

If I Google it, I found lots of hits, but nothjing telling me MS have withdrawn the facility or are amending it or .....

Luckily I kept a Registry export of my existing entries, and the facility still works in Vista, but creating new entries is not as simple.

Yeah, i looked that whole add on site over and can not find your add on that you used to use. Sorry .

That's nice of them!

I'm afraid I NEVER use Bing. Nothing against it except I just find Google better (for me) in every single aspect. I'm sure Bing is better in some respects, but I've no inclination to look for them!

But I loved the ability to create my own custom searches!!!!!!!!!!

At least the option to do it is there, even if it requires a Registry tweak

When I was using Firefox as default browser I used similar tools to make a bunch of search plugins. Now I'm using Chromium and that functionality is built right in. No need for a separate input box or drop down list. All searches are entered in the address bar.

Say you want to add Yahoo.. go there and do a search. Open the settings either by clicking all the buttons or entering this: chrome://settings/searchEngines

The search engine you just used is already in the list with the result string. Substitute %s for the word you searched on.. then enter a prefix to enter in the address bar to designate using that engine. In this case for Yahoo you may want to use ya.

Say you have google as default, just type search term in address bar. If you want to search with yahoo instead, type ya searchterm and it will search with yahoo

No rocket science. Only thing is it tends to collect 'em. Now and then you may want to clean out the debris from the settings page.
