Hi,
I hope someone can help me solve a problem I'm having. The description is kind of lengthy, but it might help to be specific.
My computer is a HP Compaq C700 with Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS Service Pack 2. It has AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus installed. It has Windows Firewall, but I don't know much about making changes in its settings.
I keep .odt files on my desktop that I created with the program OpenOffice.org, but I can't open the files by clicking on the icons. I get the following message: The requested operation requires elevation. When I left click on an .odt file icon on the desktop, there's no option on the menu to open as Administrator.
I've done the following:
I clicked on the .odt files on the desktop, and opened Properties> Security and made sure the Owner and Permissions settings should allow me access to the files.
I opened Local Disk (C:/Users/Dinah/Desktop and clicked on Properties> Security> Advanced> Permissions> and made sure all of the following are set for not inherited full control: System, Administrators, Administrator, Dinah. This is set for all descendants, too. The owner is set as Administrators for subcontainers and objects.
I made sure the settings are the same as above for Local Disk (C:/Users/Default/Desktop.
I also made sure the settings for OpenOfice should allow the sufficient privileges.
I'm familiar enough with using regedit including being sure to make a backup beforehand, and also with using .cmd as Administrator to be able to fix the problem opening the .odt files on my desktop if that's possible using these methods. I think I'm logged on as Administrator, though I can't be sure this is so, and I don't know how to verify this.
I don't want to disable User Account Control as a possible solution.
Can you tell me what I can do to be able to open .odt files that are on my desktop? I would be grateful for any help you can give me.
Dinah
