Missing CI.dll/ corrupted - linux distros don't work - can't access Safe mode

Hi. I'm having an issue with my laptop. Running vista 32bit home - getting the error code about it not having / having a corrupted CI.dll file and I've tried to run a linux distro to recover the files but it won't load. The safe mode won't load either. And the recovery disks don't fix the issue.

Is there a way I can access a cmd prompt to use the sfc /scannow command without safemode?
Please help.

I find it very hard to believe that the linux distros won't load, could you please elaborate on this?

Did you burn it to a CD or USB?
What distro(s)?
What recovery CD's have you tried?
What stage does it get to before failing?
What happens upon trying to boot into safe mode?
Are your files backed up?
Have you got your Vista installation DVD?

Hi Tom, I will need to get back to you on the exact message it gives me. But as for whether I have the installation dvd, no HP didn't deem it necessary to give me one. I tried recovery disks that I made myself and they didn't fix the issue either. I tried to open cmd from the repair menu and fixboot and fixmbr but that didn't work either. It said it was successful but it still didn't work.

That's odd. Have you added any hardware to your system recently? Try unplugging all cables from your computer (apart from the power) then boot it up.

Can you just confirm this please?

You cannot boot from your hard drive
You can boot from CD's, but not Linux distros
What about USBs?

No I can't boot anything. All the linux distros give me are messages relating to. Not. Being able to write to the ram. I have unplugged everything and tried to boot up. Nothing changed.

That shouldn't be the case. I Just upgraded my ram this last Easter. Ive tried everything for my computer. My warranty is up. Compaq wouldny even help me out with my computer they wanted me to pay for just talking to them.

I will give that a go. My ram should still be good all around. I bought them around Easter. So hopefully my ram hasn't kicked the bucket. Well... I I mean I bought the 2gb Kingston around Easter.

So I took my computer in today and they said it's either my Motherboard or the harddrive. They wanted me to pay an extra $69 for them to tell me which it is for sure. I didn't want to pay that extra fee. So now I'm going to have to find out on my own of which it is.

Any way I could do I diagnostic to tell?
