Shutdown problem/No taskmgr

32 bit Vista SP1 - HP Pavilion DV2700 Notebook. I was asked to look at this for a friend.

It refuses to shutdown normally. I actually let it sit overnight, and it had still not shut down the next morning. I always have to hold down the power button to turn the sucker off.

Event Viewer is littered with warnings and errors, all of them Event ID = 100, 200 or 402. And on every one of them the Event Log Online Help is useless - providing zero information.

I have gone into msconfig and set up the PC for a clean boot. No diff. I have initiated a chkdsk /f at next boot which completed without finding any errors. No errors found on sfc /scannow, either. Used the disk and ran startup repair. It found no problems. I created a shortcut desktop icon to shut it down. Didn't work.

A full scan using Malwarebytes found no errors. ComboFix went through all 50 stages, and got as far as 'Do not run any programs while ComboFix prepares the log'. I waited an hour. The screen did not budge.

Task manager does not work. I get the big blue screen and can click on Start Task Manager, but I get no display. But I do get the green box in the Notification Area. I get the same non-result whether I do CTL/ALT/DEL type taskmgr in the search box, or navigate to Windows/System32 and click on taskmgr.exe.

While I am able to boot into safe mode, I get no icons or taskbar, and am still unable to access task manager. I have downloaded SP2, but when I run it, it gets no further than a box indicating it is preparing the PC. I hit the power button after 45 minutes of preparation.

It sounds like the PC is a piece of crap, but it actually runs like a top as long as I don't shut it down.

From what I gather, this has been coming on for some time. The d isk I used is an iso cd I downloaded some time ago. He has no recovery disks. Restore is not really a viable option.

I have just made some changes using hijackthis and have managed to get it to boot in safe mode with networking. From there I was able to run ComboFix to a conclusion. Taskmgr is also now working. I'm going to get out of safe mode and try to install SP2.
