Solved Notepad in machine code

I am new to computers and not very computer literate. I have a problem when I try to open some pages from web sites. For example trying to order a photo book instead of an order form opening on page I just get a page headed Notepad which is full of gibberish which I have been told is machine code. This has been happening for about 2 months now but I cannot think of anything I have done to cause it. Although Im sure it is probably my fault.
Would be grateful for any help but please keep it very simple.

Tried that but still no change. I also have a exetender fatal error message when I start up. Not sure if that is connected. I think that started around about same time.

Can you go back to when it started with a system restore?

In addition, what is the exact wording of the extender fatal error?
Make a complete anti virus scan
Download and make a full scan with malwarebytes.

Have tried everything you suggested but still no change with notepad although I have got rid of the exetender fatal error on start up.
Tried system restore but I dont know when problem started so no joy there. The only other thing I have done in last month is install Office Home and Student 2010. Could that have an effect?
Sorry to be a pain but I am a complete novice at this. Normally get my daughter to sort out my computer but she has moved abroad so not so easy.

Lets restore the browser to defaults
Go to tools
internet options
advanced
reset
See it this works
If it does not , assuming that you are using Internet Explorer, give Firefox a try and see if that works any better
