New Hard Drive - Insert boot disk

I bought a new hard drive from Frys and just finished installing it onto my hp laptop and its now saying no bootable device - insert boot disk. I dont have any type of os or recovery disk.

Will I need to purchase a new os all together or can I just purchase the vista premium 32b sp1 + supp 1 recovery kit from hp that is specific to my computer?

It is my opinion that Vista is a rather old Operating System. Although the recovery disc would be sufficient (you should call HP and verify) you may want to spend just a few dollars more and purchase the upgrade version of Windows 7, which should work. The upgrade version would cost about $125.00. The recovery DVD would cost about $30.00. Yes, it is a few dollars more, but you get an OS that is the most current and will be supported many, many months after support for Vista is gone. If you are interested just post and I will give you a link that will allow you to test if your computer is capable of using Windows 7. Best of luck regardless of your decision.

If I purchased Windows 7. Would Windows 7 Home Premium "Upgrade" work even though I'm installing it on a blank hard drive or would i have to buy the more expensive original Windows 7 Home Premium

I could not find anything more current. To insure that money will not be thrown away, I would call Microsoft before the purchase to ensure that they did not make any changes that would nullify the method that I have presented. As a side note, when Seven was first released, it was the feeling of many members that the procedure described would work. As I said, however, time has past and Microsoft could have taken steps to void that procedure.
When and if interested, we can supply material that will describe in detail how to perform an clean install with an upgrade Seven

Remember that you need a valid qualifying previous version of Windows to use a Upgrade Windows 7,

Unfortunately those tutorials do not make mention of a new hard drive, which is the primary problem in this situation.
Since I used an upgrade Seven to install from Vista, I do know that the remaining portion of the scenario will work.
