windows complete backup problem

vista business , I am trying to "backup computer" to a usb hard drive.
gets to :-
windows is saving the backup
preparing to create backup

then
the backup failed
failure in a volume shadow copy service operation. (0x807800A1)
the writer experienced a transient error.if the backup process is retried, the error may not reoccur. (0x800423F3)

but it keeps reoccuring.
