Deleting System Volume Information Okay?

Right now System Volume Information is taking up 60GB+ on a 218GB drive. I tried limiting the size of the shadow copies but due to registry errors caused by some cleaner I can't run VSS or anything regarding System Restore. I'm not comfortable with messing with my registry, so is it okay for me to delete all the files?

If the booting does not work.I think you should do the following:-

A full & updated anti-virus scan followed by,
downloading and make a full and updated scan with malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes freeware

Please advise us of results.

If you can just turn off system restore the points will be gone.
If you cannot do that download ccleaner. There is an option to delete all restore points except the last one. That is a good feature, it is always good to have at least one point. Be sure that the point was not made while you had the virus.
It is not a problem to delete the points except from a precaution standpoint. If you ever need them they will not be there to help

The problem is that System Restore is broken. The program(and CCleaner) say I don't have any restore points, when I know I actually do, and I cannot create any new ones. Disabling System Restore or running Disk Cleanup on the Restore files does not free any memory. So I've got this huge file of backup information that's essentially useless. I'm asking if I can delete it.

You must run ccleaner from an adminsitrative account to see the restore points.
I am trying to get you to delete it with know methods. I do not want you to delete in a none prescribed manner. But yes system restore points can be deleted if done properly.

Running CCleaner as Admin still says I have no restore points, and so does the System Restore program. When creating a restore point, I get the error "The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error. 0x8004230F"

Go to search by the start button
Type services
In services look for volume shadow copies
Set to automatic
Your System Restore should be working again as it should

Already set to Automatic. Restarted the service anyway but it still doesn't work properly.

Did you run the anti virus and malwarebytes as suggested?
Lets be sure of the reason that you cant delete the points. If a virus or other malware is found, we can get an expert in the area to help.

Malwarebytes found one Trojan in some unrelated program. A full Microsoft Security Essentials scan turned up nothing. System Restore is still blank.

While I still cannot resize the System Volume file or create restore points, the file is gone and all of the 60GB has returned to free space. So...problem solved I guess?

Were the files deleted manually or did they just go?
There is still I think the case of sorting out the fact that you cannot use system restore?
So, only one problem solved.
Did you happen to make note of what that Trojan was, that you found?

The reason you cannot use these programs to do anything, is because they ask Windows to do the stuff for them. Without the services running, this is why you cannot do anything. No other reason.

Why don't the services run? You said registry cleaner. If this really is the case, then I think that there is nothing to be done but to re-install.

If you want, I can have a look. Please tell me which services are not starting, and with what error code.
