Boot CD System File Checker problem

I am trying follow the methord to part of this tutorial (SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot - Windows 7 Forums) to run the system file checker from the command line off of a Windows Vista repair CD. My command ends up looking like "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=E:\ /offwindir=C:\windows". It just sends back Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. Is there something I am doing wrong?

P.S. - The reason I am trying to run the SFC is because Windows immediately logs out when I try to log in. I heard this could be because the userinit.exe file was missing so I tried to check it. Weirdly enough when I tried to find the system32 folder through the boot cd and through Ubuntu Live CD I couldn't find it. Is there something else I should be trying? Any help would be appreciated.

The best way is this...

1. Click start...
2. Type CMD in the search box...
3. When the pop up list appears right click on the cmd and click run as administrator.
4. When command box appears type sfc /scannow...
5. Let it run and don't clcik any buttons untill finished if it shows any errors then run the sfc 3 more times.

In my first post I forgot to say that I typed sfc at the beggining of the command. I cannot get into windows so I am doing all of this from the repair disk. Does anybody think my system32 folder is actually deleted or is it just hidden. If so how can I acces it?

I have already accessed the windows file sytem from the Ubuntu live cd. The weird thing is that I couldn't see/access the system32 folder from there either.

I have tried booting in safe mode it still just logs in and immediately logs out without showing me the desktop. Using startup repair is how I got windows to startup in the first place. Before that it just went to a bluescreen without booting up.

If you are the only user when it boots in safe mode it opens an administrator account.

Hello I think you should try this.

1. When you first turn the power button on start tapping F-10 and keep tapping it until it either comes up like before or maybe it will take you to safe mode. Depending on your system it might be F-8 but when you start tapping the F-10 button hopfully it wil take you to the safe boot or system restore. Try this one and get back to us as soon as you can.

Hello ilkiefree it is nice that you have come in on this one from what I gather they cannot even boot into safe mode or there desktop, that's why I asked them if the have a full version of vista or the recovery disk's and thus far no responce back to us. . I am not sure where to go on this except for a full factory restore.

If you are unable to boot into safe mode your chances of a good recovery are not good.
Do you have access to another computer.
If so burn a rescue disc with Image Burn
Then when you try to restart your computer, before windows starts to load, press whatever it says to get into the boot menu and set it to start with DVD at the top
You will have to use arrow keys as no driver will have loaded for the mouse.
Put in the disc and reboot.

The disk is a dell disk. When I boot up the computer with it it gives me the option to install vista or repair.I can boot up windows just fine in both normal mode and safe mode. My problem is that when I try to select one of either of the accounts (administrator and non-administrator) they say loging int but then they just say logging of without showing me the desktop.

This may have been already covered. But depending on which dell system, they usually have a number of built in recovery systems?

Repair is still what I would try first.

EDIT: My understanding was the OP couldn't boot.
The rescue disc will allow them to and allow them to run the repair option.
