System Restore on a non-bootable computer

I was under the impression that I could access Windows System Restore on a computer that does not boot.

I hit F8 during the boot process and it brings me to the Advanced Startup options. I see Last Known Good Configuration, which I guess is a limited version of System Restore, but I want to be able to pick an older restore point.

So I clicked Repair My Computer instead, and it then attempts to run Startup Repair and fails. I never saw the option for System Restore.

Is there a way to access System Restore where I can choose from the existing restore points, when the computer will not boot?

If you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.

I'm restoring it now from a Ghost image. But I was hoping to resolve this quickly with System Restore instead.

But I am still wondering why I don't have a System Restore option under Repair My Computer. I'd like to get this figured out in case I need System Restore in the future on this or another unbootable system.

After you restore with the image, test make sure everything is the way that you want it.

See if you can set up a system restore point, then check, again
