Unsuitable System Volume on Vista Installation

I am trying to restore 64 bit Vista Home Premium from a retailer supplied DVD. I have no OS loaded and a blank HDD with 240gb of unallocated space. The installation process is OK until I am asked where I want to install Vista and press "install". At that point I get the message "Windows can not find a system volume that meets the installation criteria" What does it mean and how do I get around it?
