How do I change themes in vista?

Iv been trying to do this for a couple of days now but cant get my head round it. Iv done everything iv had to( patched/changed the files in the system 32 folder, i.e uxtheme.dll) but when iv re-booted and went to personalize to select a new theme iv added to the windows themes folder the visual style file isnt recognized as a theme file and I still only have the option off classic and aero theme. Does anyone know how to get around this? as im sure it can be done. Thanks in advance

No unfortunately, I already know how to change a basic theme but when you download themes they seem to be a .msstyles file and not a .theme file so when I paste the .msstyle file I have dowloaded into the windows/resources/theme folder and try to select a new theme through the personalize settings, the .msstyles file isnt there, only the standard aero and classic options

Sorry then patchy. On my computer those are things that dont interest me and I have not had another similiar question. So hopefully, one of the younger members will be able to help.

Iv been following the instructions but when it says I can select my d/loaded .msstyle file from display properties, how do I get to display properties? Iv noticed this is for xp, not vista
