laptop randomly shuts down not overheating

Ok, so I am working on a laptop for my buddy's wife. It is a hp pavilion dv9700. Obviously enough the title explains it all. I have blown canned air through it and it seemed to run for about 3 hours in safe mode while I defraged it. Logged back on and tried to preform update to sp2 and crashed in the middle. Luckily it turned out just fine. I don't believe it's due to overheating because the bottom and the keyboard aren't hot, at least not compared to any other laptop. I have tried to replace the memory and it still happens. Anyone have any ideas? I'm so stumped. SystemInfoEdited.jpg picture by dragonpoet88 - PhotobucketHere is a link to her system Info. I had to edit it because she used her first and last name as the user. And also she actually has 4gb of ram installed, there is just 3 because I tired to replace it with my own as previously stated. Well, thanks for the help in advance.

P.S.
I have read some stuff where its the thermal paste. How would I go about replacing that?? And is that a symptom of anything?

P.S.S.
And when I say "shutting down", it shuts off. No log off screen, no BSOD (blue screen of death), just off.

P.S.S.S.
And It's not when it's normally running when It's shutting off. It's shut off in safe mode and I have even seen it shut off on the screen where is says "press F2 to blah blah blah" when you first turn the laptop on.

Welcome
First we have to try and diagnose before trying to fix
I am starting with the assumption that it works ok in safe mode. If it does not we should look toward a hardware issue. I am focusing on software

If it works in safe mode try with a clean boot.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If it does not shut down, follow procedue. If it does shut down go to next step

Download and test for overheating (your touch the keyboard method is not a recognized overheating test) by using speedfan.
If it is overheating thats the cause if not follow next step

I guess this has to be done in safe mode, although no the best way. Download malwarebytes and run a full updated scan with that and your anti virus.
Negative go to next step

Go to event viewer and give me the codes and explanations of the various shutdowns.

I've tried to boot it in safe mode and it also shuts off there to. And if you could tell me how to use speedfan, that would be great. I've downloaded it but still not exactly sure what to do with it. Thanks for the help! I will have to check more into this post when I get off work. Hope to hear from you soon.

Sorry I haven't replied, I've been a bit busy to say the least. But I have the computer running and it's bee going all day because the side that the fan is on (right) has been half way off the table today. The GPU temp is at 65 C and the Core temp is 45 C. I haven't been on it, it's just been on. I wanted to see if it would shut off on it's own.

My Computer

Temp sounds OK with those figures
Event viewer, administrative events, critical, should give you a report on critical faults.

OK, I just got it to shut off. I was booted normally and had Mozilla Firefox, SpeedFan, Automatic Screenshots Software (so if it did shut off I could see what temp it was when I got home from work) running. I had minimized and tried to access the flash drive that I had plugged in to view the bitmap image that it saved the screenshot to and it shut off. Like I have stated previously, no BSOD, no "Logging off", just off.I had tried to turn it back on and it would just start to load the Windows operating system and shut off. I can't access safemode much less the screen that gives me the choice to access screen mode. Anyone know of any way that I can trouble shoot this? I don't know if this will help but here is the image of what it looked like before the crash: http://s84.photobucket.com/albums/k34/dragonpoet88/?action=view&current=temp.jpg

P.S.
It doesn't shut off in the bios as previously stated before. I was mistaken. It is running SP! and the bios version is F.30.

Do you have an install disc?
DVD will be LRMCFRE-EN-DVD
If not borrow someones and make an .iso copy with Image Burn and burn it to a disc.

Download any of the live cd and burn to disc
SystemRescueCd
The LiveCD List

Reset your boot options to DVD/CDROM
Boot with the live CD to remove any files you want to keep.

Download ABR and save your activation key.
ABR (Activation Backup and Restore) | directedge.us

Reinstall with the install DVD.

I think this is what I would do. A fresh start is always good.

It does have a recover shadow copy on it, would that be the same? Can I trust it wouldn't shut off while whipping everything? Or would it be better to do it from and install disk as you suggested?

Restore will have all the OEM software on it
Fresh install will remove all that rubbish.

Note if a live CD won't run the problem is not with Windows it is with the computer itself

I can talk you through every step.
First I would download ABR and save you activation key
Then I would burn any of the live CD to disc and reset your boot order to CD/DVDRAM and see if the live CD will run.
If it will remove all files you want to keep including the file ABR has created

OK, so I tried to do a factory restore on it and it's still shutting off. I had to let it cool down before it could even set up windows. I don't get it, it won't shut off in BIOS and it won't shut off in HP Restore. Could this mean it's a hardware issue?

Set the boot order to boot from CD/DVDROM and try a live CD in it.

If it may be overheating, download speed fan and check temps.
You may have thrown ILike off the track by having an opening statement that its not a heat problem. Check for overheating, this can destroy your computer.

Here are the temps of when it shut off. I will try and get a more recent one.
