Missing Files and Email

I'm helping a friend with her computer. This is my second experience with Vista. Here is her problem:

"I am sharing the PC with my husband here at the house. He set up a separate identity for me with my own logon so I could set up my email, documents, etc. It seemed to be working fine until this morning when I logged on and couldn't find any of the documents I'd saved and created. None of the emails I've sent this week are stored in my "sent" folder even though they were all there yesterday. And the only emails that show up are things that were sent after about 11:30 a.m yesterday. Nothing from the rest of this week or last."

At the moment, I am remotely logged into the computer with TeamViewer. Her husband's account is open. He is an administrator on the machine.

The problem sounds like a profile problem, based on my knowledge of XP. When I try to look at her \user\wife_name folder, I don't have permission. Vista offers a path to get permission, but since I'm not familiar with Vista, I don't go there yet.

Can someone offer me a troubleshooting path to solve this problem? Her email is Outlook 2003.

You download shadow explorer and use from the account in question.
They may have disappeared due to a power surge during boot etc.
Did you know that if you lose power during a save (you lose everything, not just the new portion that you are trying to save)
There are all kinds of possibilities
power surge
corruption
malware
virus
etc.

Yes, I do know those things. I was able to log into her account, but she is not an administrator, so I cannot install the program. When her husband gets home, he will have to enter his password. Then I can install ShadowExplorer and run it from her account. Her documents folder is empty. Thanks.

There are other methods with permissions etc, but the best way is to use her account.

She is now an administrator, ShadowExplorer is installed, but there are still no documents. I'll try recuva now. I wonder if I'm getting the entire story from her. Something is strange.

Shadow explorer should be able to find them.

I'm going to have to talk with the lady. All I know is what I posted. There are no files in her documents or my documents folder. The problem only started Friday. It's as if there is a missing profile. If she lost her profile and then created another one, that's bad. She's normally fairly computer savvy, for a non-technical person. Again, thanks for your help. I'll post back when I know more.

If you find them we can be happy together, if not maybe, with new facts, we can still help.

You have to pick a restore point from the time the folders still existed - if there is one available.

This problem is one of the strangest I have ever seen. The only files that are missing from email are Sent messages. The missing documents are nowhere to be found. I have searched using the two utilities mentioned above. Something is really strange here.
