Hp touchsmart tm2-1010ea

Hi

I have just bought one of these damaged. The screen is smashed, there is no HDD, RAM, Battery and Power Supply. It also has bad damage to one corner (been dropped from a huge height by the looks) thus damaging lid, palm rest and base. I know RAM and P/S are not a great cost issue but I'm not sure if it is worth buying a new screen and hdd for it. I paid £42.00 for laptop as it was part of a job lot, and I see they retail at around £500-£600. Should I fix it up to sell or keep, or just sell it as it is to see if I can make a slight profit?

Forgot, obviously, not been able to check MOBO on it either yet, no spares to check it.

I think that the answer depends upon your computer skill and the value of your time.
In my case, I would not have even bought it, but Im not handy.
If I did buy it, I would try to sell at a small profit.
In you case if you think that you can fix it, and the time used is not worth more than the profit, go for it.

Hi rikstaparr,

Aside from the things you know are broken or missing, besides the MOBO you also don't know about the audio card, video card, processor, speakers, CD/DVD Drive, modem, network card and/or wireless card, wiring (if the screen is smashed, it may have cut wires and involve more than just replacing the screen) or just about anything else. These things may all be OK or they may all be defective or broken. Are you planning to sell it with a working OS or without one - that's an additional expense (and you need to consider what OS it will accommodate in terms of the computer itself as well as the individual replacement components if you buy replacements or need to replace other things you may find defective).

I personally see this as quite a bit different than a normal repair job where you know what's wrong, know what it will take to fix it (and how much that will cost), and know you can do all the things required. Here you don't know what does or doesn't work besides what is clearly broken or missing. It's one thing to be handy, and another to quite possibly pour money down the drain (to say nothing of the time and effort spent getting there). I have repaired many computers over the years, but never one like this - if presented with it, I would toss it into the trash in less than a minute. Plus what they are selling for and what you can get for one that shows obvious damage as you described (unless you plan on replacing the casing as well) is likely to be quite different. Even if shown it works, I would never purchase a laptop showing that kind of damage - I simply could never trust it (or I'd want a deal where you'd end up losing money).

But, of course, the decision is yours. Simply replacing the missing parts and repairing the screen may be all it takes (plus an OS) to get it to work - then it's just a matter of convincing buyers that the visible damage is not of consequence and finding a buyer. There's no way to know the entire story until you've already poured money into it to see what happens.

IMHO, for what it's worth, I'd try to see if you can sell it as is and hope you can do so at all or at least break even. I wouldn't expect to make much of a profit.

Good luck!
